I kinda want to paint over all that paint splatter stuff on the back. Having trouble deciding whether its worth the trouble.

If you really care about how it looks sit it next to your outerwear and try and imagine a color that would work well with it. It's your helmet, all up to you.

just paint it black and throw some stickers on it. you can never go wrong with a black helmet.

flat black.. dont use gloss, gloss paint from a rattle can looks like garbage

and make sure you primer it..

if you do paint it, make sure to mask off the interior of it as the paint and paint fumes can effect the protective properties of the materials. also by painting you might change the properties of the outer material making it more likely to split. my advice is dont paint it. its main purpose is to protect your head not to be a fashion accessory.

you can NOT paint a helmet! Are people doing this? I know that the chemicals in spray paint severely damage the outer shell and make it much less likely to properly absorb impact. I am not positive if the same is true for other paints, but I would NOT paint it at all.

Use black "Plasti-Dip" one rattle can will be plenty, it will be flat black, and if you dont like it later it will peel off! No prep or primer needed.

I think that a black helmet with white horizontal stripes painted on would be pretty cool. Might be a bit busy though :P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the interior foams job to absorb most of the impact?

I had a last generation blue Black Diamond Half Dome climbing helmet (they suck so bad, NEVER get one of the old ones, they don't fit heads right), which is like the most common color/model ever. I used spray paint and stickers as stencils. I put three coats of spray on poly-u as a protectant, too. Personally I think that OP's friend's helmet looks cool as is. I definitely wouldn't put a solid coat on. You might experiment with some multi-colored splatters or a couple asymmetrical stripes.

yes, the foam absorbs the impact, but without the outer structure holding it in place, the foam won't absorb anything. Think of it like this; the airbag in your car provides a cushion for you, but if the steering wheel that the airbag came out of isn't secured to anything, then the airbag won't do much.

Basically, if you paint your helmet, you will definitely die.

Spraypaint usually has styrene monomer in it. The foam inside the shell may or may not be polystyrene, aka styrofoam. Styrene monomer will ruin the poly part of your polystyrene, which isn't good for your head. So if you must paint, don't get it on the foam.

if you drive your car without the steering wheel attached then you would probably die. If you wear your helmet but dont buckle it then you will die in a similar fashion as driving a car with out your seat belt... i dont know where i am going with this. i have painted my helmets before and the only thing that was really damaging to the integrity of them was bouncing my head off the ground.
