Chiropractors: What are your opinions of them?

So Ive been having extremely bad lower back pain for the majority of my life. I have seen traditional doctors for this problem many times. Until recently the only support they have provided is through Opiates and muscle relaxers. As I am fairly in tune with the notion that the traditional medical system is broken and if you go to the dr you should only expect a pill or a proposition to do surgery I decided to look for alternatives. I saw a chiropractor for the first time this week and after reviewing my xrays and doing some research of my own, I kindof feel like they have a bad rap. Their theory that the nervous system and the spine are extremely critical in wellness seems well grounded. I was alligned for the first and second time over the past 3 days and I feel much better. Before I continue I am getting advice from different people (some swear by them some say run away from them). So I come to you NS'ers. What is your feeling and experiences about them. LETS HERE IT!!!

I like the electric pads they put on your back to loosen you up before they crack you. Chiropractors? I'm For Em!

When I was 17 I knuckled a jump and had horrendous pain. A few days later, I was unable to put on my own shoes because I could not bend over at all.

I visited a chiropractor who also specialized in physical therapy. His diagnosis was that I had shifted my spine out of alignment. After a mere three visits of ultrasound heating, massaging and stretching I was 100%. There was NO pressure to return for any further visits unless I had continued paid. My experience was extremely positive and I would not hesitate to return to one if the circumstances arose.

If a chiro is pushing you to return regularily over long periods of time, it may be time to reevaluate your treatment needs, just as a M.D. doing little more than writing scripts for opiates and telling you to follow-up with future appointments should also cause you to reevaluate your treatment needs.

let me ask you this - how do you define what a doctor is then? a chiro passes boards and must get licensed...not just any joe off of the street can open a clinic and call themselves a chiro...

They're doctors in the same way that a PhD is a doctor. They're doctors, just not medical doctors. That's not to say that what they do isn't helpful for people, but they often disagree with common medical practice and think they are the shit, which is why "real" doctors dislike them for the most part.

I think it would piss me off if I was a back specialist and some dentist-level-doc was out doing the same shit with arguably better results for the majority of injuries for 1/25th the cost.

That and there will always be a low end to the qulality of care spectrum, and kooks will always exist in any medical field.  Most eastern medicinal practices aren't generally accepted, such as chiros and accupuncture, but if people find relief in it I have a hard time caring what the quantative data side looks like if the quality properties are there.  After all, what good is medicine if it doesn't make you feel better? 

I respect the opinions of medical professionals, but to dismiss the practice as witchcraft or placebo is laughable beyond laughable to anyone who has had good results.  Oh well.  No worries, just trying to share my experience with chiros since I was fully entrenched in the "fuck that" camp for a very long time and can totally see where you guys are coming from in thinking that.

Not at all.

Again, a DC must pass clinicals and board exams and be licensed to practice in the locale in which they practice. A PhD is nothing more than a pinnacle degree granted by an educational institution designating a mastery of knowledge in a particular field.

well depending on what the person with the PhD is using it for they may have to pass all the same types of things...

and really, its not hard to study and pass one of these exams.

Well, whatever you want to call them, they simply are NOT medical doctors. They do not practice medicine. I mean, shit, they may as well call Ling Ling the masseuse down at Ruv Rong Time Massage Parlor a chiropractor. You get the same results with her, plus a happy ending.

ya I mean last time I went to the chiropractor he just cracked my back and neck and then took this gun and put in everyone of my vertebras and pulled the trigger. I didnt really feel it do much though.

didnt seem like to tough of a profession if you ask me.

I have nothing vested personally, but my personal experience was extremely positive. I went from not being able to put on my own shoes for a week straight with zero sign of improvement to being able to run and return to activity in three visits, with ZERO pressure to return for more treatment. A total of 3-hours of my time and $30 in insurance co-pays is all that was invested. I have not been back to a chiropractor in 10+ years. That said, I would not hesitate to return should the circumstances permit.

Please share your personal experience that qualifies you to speak so vehemently against chiropractors. I'm honestly interested in hearing why you despise them so much.

Like I said in an earlier post, I never said they can't help people, but to compare them to medical doctors is an insult to the entire medical field.

You can choose to infer that if you wish, but the point I am trying to make is that comparing apples to oranges is absurd as the only similarity between the two is that they can both be referred to as fruit, or in the case of PhD's, DC's and MD's is that all can be referred to as doctors and that a high level of education is required for all.

i finally found one that is more concerned with the long run than temporary relief, i like my chiropractor even though he is a little rough on me

There are a shit ton of shitty ass retard doctors who are somehow able to practice (at least in Canada). It's pretty upsetting

u are basically arguing with urself. they arent medical doctors. im glad they arent. medical drs do 2 things and tell me if im wrong.. for treatment there are two options...take a pill, or cut you in some way.

All im saying is if you want an alternative to a pill or knife, a chiropractor is a good option, just as a trainer at a gym may be a better option than a pill for high bloodpressure. or a massage therapist is great for muscle strain over flexeral. If you want to compare drs to chiropractors its apples and oranges. And honestly with our medical system, I dont think that statement is an insult to chiropractors.
