How to dampen vibrations from subs?

Hey guys, so I installed a subwoofer into my truck a while back, along with nice speakers and 2 amps. The system sounds great, apart from a ton of vibration in my door panels. I have a 97' F150 extended cab. So I really don't have that many panels. How can I reduce or stop the vibration? Its to the point where its so distracting it takes away from the music. I've discovered that the noise is made when the panels vibrate against each other, so if I put my hand over the spot in which the vibration is coming from, it stops. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can dampen the sound?

And if it helps I listen to classic rock and older rap mostly. So the bass isn't very much, and its still creating a ton of vibration.

stop focusing on dampening the vibration from the subs.... that's the point of the subs.


focus on tightening up/securing the panels

No im not trying to dampen the sub itself. Im trying to dampen the vibration of the panels. My question is, how do I secure the panels without glueing them or permanently securing them? I still want to be able to disassemble my panels.

I dont know if dynamat would stop the panels from vibrating together. If I had an issue with road noise, then that would be perfect. Im thinking like put cotton balls between the places where they touch and vibrate?

i dunno man


chances are if the panels vibrate that much then you didn't secure them well enough when you put the panels back on (assuming you disassembled them before)

dynamat (or a cheaper alternative) will help a LOT.

Also if you really want good sound without fiberglassing the shit out of all your panels and whatnot, I would HIGHLY recommend using a sealed box. They wont be as loud but will sound way better. My car I only fiberglassed the panels right around where the door speakers were mounted and I put noiseproofing in the back area and on the floor (it was a hatchback). Sounded really good at normal everyday volume and still got as loud as you would ever want it with minimal vibration.

when I think of ported boxes I think of a teenager with stock speakers and two 12" subs in the trunk with their trunk vibrating like crazy.

that is awesome. vibrating door panels are not. they make it sound like shit. Anything that is resonating besides the speakers are gonna introduce harmonic distortion.

Fat mat. Same shit, half price. One side is butyl, the other side is foil, stick it onto the panel like a huge sticker push it into all the contours and it should fix it.

U drive an old vehicle so the clips that hold the panels in place have probobly come loose or bc of a few of the panels being removed in the past, the clips have failed thus making the panels more suseptable to vibration and flex. Do urself a favor and go down to the ford dealer or local body shop and order the door panel clips for both front doors. If this doesn't stop it ull only be out 20 bucks. I work at a bodyshop and we see poorly assembled cars all the time. Usually from an owner trying to do a repair or an car audio "friend" who may know how to hook up speakers but has no business disassembling a car

I am 100% sure this is my problem. I have disassembled it plenty of times to fix my window motor and to install my speakers. I'm positive my clips are loose, but I'm trying to avoid having to do a full on restoration of my panels. I just need something small that I can stick between my panels. I will give this dynamat a shot, but I have a feeling it won't fix my problem. I only have one 10 inch sub, so it's not like I'm "bumping" super hard. I mean shit I listen to classic rock. I shouldn't be getting the vibration with a classic rock song. I'll do some improvising.

this stuff works great. i had my trunk, doors, and floor lined with the stuff. It's a pain in the ass to put on, and it's heavy as fuck if you get the good stuff, but it does wonders to eliminate rattling, etc.

Next time try FatMat.  Same stuff, half the price.  If you have a unibody car though, you may want to foam the spaces, cut off the extra and then wrap it, which takes rattles out back and shows 'em who's boss no matter how big your system is.

Foam tape on the backside of the panels. That way they will vibrate on on the foam and not something else. Hell of a lot cheaper than dynomat.

This is the very best way to deal with vibrations and road noise. Dynamat/Fatmat/Rammat also work but are somewhat overpriced for what you get. Deadening your car/truck is one the best ways to get better sound quality

I'm telling u op the clips are super cheap and if u had a body shop do it I would doubt ud spend 50 bucks. It's so easy u lived near me I would do it for free

Got a quote on the clips. My guy is charging me 25 bucks to redo all the clips. I looked into the foam tape idea and taped up some of the panels that were touching, seemed to help a lot! But i've also noticed a vibration inside my door. I took the panel off and my power lock mechanism is a mere metal rod going the entire way from the bottom of my door, to the lock. I am guessing this is the culprit to my vibration in the inside of the door. Ill see what I can do with it. Even if the clips dont solve the problem, its annoying having loose panels anyway. And for 25 bucks? Cant argue.

depending on what your on about... expanding foam (used to fit doors and windows) can be squirted between and would stop the vibration if its caused from panel on panel...

but yer really to give you a proper suggestion picture would be nice..

like i said its not expensive and it will improve the overall feel of ur ride much greater than 25 bucks worth. also just use the foam tape on that rod in the door where it touches anything else. that should do ya

Theres no way I can get a picture that will accurately show the vibration. Its internal. And if I take the panel off, I still wouldn't be able to show you. Trust me, I tried to get pictures last night.

No, it does have a small amount or rattling, but thats from the wiring and the metal clips. They don't make the sound when the panel is on, however.

Have some hot naked bitch if you can find one sit on the sub while it's vibrating. While it'll stop the rattling, I'm sure you'll hear some other interfering noise.

God damn theres alot of shitty responses on NS these days!

Get some foam, any foam, and use it in between any 2 places where you see vibration! fixing rattles should be a pretty easy thing to do... if its just your door panel you can stuff all the foam you can in there and stop anything from touching anything..ya heard?

People without subs should be jeaaalous btw, improves ANY type of music.

My friends sub knocks so hard vibration is inevitable. When I sit in the back my back occasionally cracks from the bass hitting so hard.

This guy is right on. Ported boxes will make your subs hit much harder and will be more less "muddy" vibration. Dynamat is definitely worth it even if it is expensive. It will make your subs sound much better too because the sound waves will be directed into the passenger cabin instead of being absorbed by your body panels. You will actually be surprised by how much better your system will sound after using dynamat.
