Project Help | Evolution of Skis

Doing a project on the evolution of skis and I'm stumped, I've been googling for a while and can't find something that is actually interesting.

A timeline would be great, but not one with dates from 1800's

i believe the Sami people of scandinavia were the first to use skis, they used them to hunt and get around in the snow, easier. ("CC" skis)

I know that skis were further developed during world war 2, look up the tenth mountain division.

well, just looking at wiki (you got me curious) it says the first documented find of a ski was about 1000 miles north of moscow, then there's all the stuff about scandinavia. keep what I said but also have that in mind.

also this may be very unreliable but heres the timeline of the history of skiing on wikipedia
  • 6300-5000BC: Oldest ski is found in Lake Sindor, about about 1,200km northwest of Moscow). Skis made of hard wood.[4]
  • 5100: Vefsn Nordland ski, oldest ski found in Norway.[5]
  • 4000BC: Rock drawings, e.g. at Rødøy in Norway (discovered 1933) or at Steinkjer (discovered 2001),[6] depict a man on skis holding a stick.
  • 3200BC: The oldest known ski, Kalvträskskidan was found in 1924 in a mire in Sweden, and has been carbon dated to roughly 3200 B.C.
  • 600BC: skiing practised in Daxing'anling, in what is now China.[7]
  • 950: Skiing is recorded in Norse mythology, where two deities—the god Ullr and the goddess Skaði are described as hunting on skis. Egil Skallagrimsson's 950 AD saga describes King Haakon Adalsteinsfostre the Good's practice of sending his tax collectors out on skis.[8]
  • 1010: a primitive ski excavated in Greenland is dated back to 1010.[9]
  • 1555: Swedish writer Olaus Magnus in his writings A Description of the Northern Peoples in 1555. His accounts record early primitive skiers and their climbing skins in Scricfinnia, a country or region at the top of modern Norway.[10]
  • 1673: Early descriptions of ski wax.
  • 1741: First depiction of a skier with two ski poles. Up to then skiers typically used one long pole or spear.[11]
  • 1747: Descriptions of military exercises on skis.[12]
  • 1799: French traveller Jacques de la Tocnaye visits Norway and writes in his travel diary: "In winter, the mail is transported through Filefjell mountain pass by a man on a kind of snow skates moving very quickly without being obstructed by snow drifts that would engulf both people and horses. People in this region move around like this. I've seen it repeatedly. It requires no more effort than what is needed to keep warm. The day will surely come when even those of other European nations are learning to take advantage of this convenient and cheap mode of transport."[13]
  • 1809: Olaf Rye: first known ski jumper.
  • 1861: Alpine ski racing as an organised sport commences in America[14], Australia and Norway.[15]
  • 1868: Mountain resorts became commercially viable when city-dwellers could reach them in winter by train.[16]
  • 1868: Sondre Norheim demonstrates Telemark skiing, and the stem Christie. [17]
  • 1879: first recorded use of the word slalom.[18]
  • 1872: The oldest ski club in North America still existing is the Nansen Ski Club,[19] which was founded in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants of Berlin, New Hampshire under a different name.[20]

I did a similar project except for a piece of art. I didn't include it, but I know skis date wayy back. I'm not sure if it was Norseman or not, but I know they used to use long boards to make hunting and getting from point a to point b easier. (I mean real long) And when poles came along, only one was used and it was extremely longer than anything we have today. That's the earliest skiing I know of...

did the same project for a bio class but i brought in about 8 pairs of skis to show from race to pow skis and showed how they were different
