Does anyone use step down rings?

So I was thinking, instead of having different sized filters, it would be a lot more economical to have one set of filters and then step down rings to accommodate other lenses with different diameters.
Does anyone do this? Are there any cons to using step down rings?

I do this with my lenses, I have a 77mm ND filter then I have 77-72 77-67 and 77-52 step down rings (all for different lenses) works great, you get used to switching everything around, its kinda annoying at first.

step-UP rings. you step UP from the lens filter threads, to the actual filter's threads. step DOWN implies the filter is smaller than the lens threads

Not yet, but I'm gonna buy some step-up rings for sure. Much cheaper than buying different filters. Except for UWA's, this works great
