This was written in an article On Mountatain bike.com and I saved it because it applies to the different styles of skiing so well. I have no problems with and nothing against any style of skiing, but i agree with what the article says.
'Can't we all just get along?'
Ah, the brilliant words of Rodney King, trying to convince everybody to play nice and stop the LA riots that were triggered by events stemming from his beating at the hands of LAPD officers. This one's for all you bike-type Rodney King wanna-be's who write in to tell me that I shouldn't make fun of singlespeeders, and Zap shouldn't be critical of Freeriders and Matt shouldn't be critical of XC racers:
'We should all work together and get along - we're all mountain bikers, after all,' One reader wrote. Yup. And the Dems and Repubs and Jeffords are all politicians, so they should work together. Cats and dogs should get along because they're both mammals. F1 and NASCAR fans should play nice. Men and women, clowns and mimes… You can find common links between all of them, so they should all get along, right?
DH guys love the speed. Freeriders love the stunts. XC guys are after the efficiency and fitness. I still can't figure the singlespeeders, but I can say that the tech geeks love the product, endurance freaks love testing their ability to withstand fatigue, and racers love the competition. The point is, sure, we all use the mountain bike, but we all use it as a means to a different end. Every mountain biker looks for and gets something different from the sport, and likely can't understand why any of the other users is so passionate about whatever it is that they pursue and get from turning the pedals. Mountain biking has something to offer to just about everyone, which is part of what makes it so cool. If mountain biking delivers what you need, great. If you're holding out for all mountain bikers to stand together and be supportive of each other regardless of differences, you're going to be waiting for a while, no doubt.
