What kind of TV is the best?

I am in the market for a new TV. Looking for one in the 37in-42in range. And The main debate is LCD, LED, or Plasma.... They are all around the same in their other specs. But what is better LCD, LED, or Plasma?

LCD seems to be the most expensive, but is it really worth it?

LED seems to be middle according to price.

And Plasma seems like the worst.

Is that accurate? Anyone have any personal experience with all 3 or just 2 of them?

The Sharp Aquos is like looking into heaven, Samsung LCDs are decent for price, but lag for idea games so be careful

I would go with LED. Plasma definitely is junk, but Ive never had an lcd tv, but I can definitely vouch that led's have great picture.

Thanks asshole. I didnt know what the fuck google is. I tried that and it didn't really give me the answers I wanted. Rated them in all different kinds of categories that I was not concerned with.

i have a 46 samsung lcd 120hz.

i would not do 120hz again. never use it. don't like the how it affects the picture.

have it hooked to a pc through an hdmi cable. feels weird to play battlefield, but you get used to it. can't comment if it would be any better on an lcd or plasma. never had either.

i dont know whats wrong with plasma, i really like mine the colors and depth are way nicer, it heats up a bit but i have had it for 5 years and it dosent look outdated so thats just my experience. i know you can burn images into the screen but its never happened to me.

well how much do you want to spend?

i have a $300 vizio 42" that i'm sure is shitty compared to other tv's but it looks quite nice and gets 1080p with 120 hz refresh

but sharp aquos tv's are like a visual orgasm

kk sorry, after looking it up i can explain better:
LED is a better type of LCD, and thus LCD are cheaper. however when comparing LCD TV's, Samsung's are (supposedly, as heard from salesmen and witnessned myself while shopping last christmas) the best, and rival many LED tvs on the market.

But from experience i have learned that playing video games on a Samsung TV is messed up, it causes some weird lag that is really annoying (and impossible for COD fyi)

yes. although it is the only lcd tv that i have owned, so when i say yes its not because i am able to compare it to previously owned tv's. matter of opinion that i think i made a good purchase. i did research the tv prior to buying and did get good reviews. it's the touch of red one where at certain angles or light, the bezel has a tint of red to it.

i'm in the same boat with game lag. just doesn't feel like the mouse is connected to the movement on the screen. it's hard to explain, but you know something isn't right.

is your experience with a samsung lcd as well? or does it feel weird in the led offerings as well?

no offense but why would you consult newschoolers about what kind of TV is best? there are a plethora of reviews you could find by googling "reviews on (fill in the blank for whatever category) for TV's" we're a bunch of ignant skiers who know probably about as much as you know about TV's.

That being said, great thread and im posting up in it because i'll soon have enough money to buy a sick TV and i'm hoping someone will magically do all the research for me. because thats really at it is (you're a lazy motherfucker and we all know it. #america) go patriots. church.

Plasma has, by far, the best color accuracy. But I'd never get one for home use since they burn in like a forest fire.

also they do use a lot of power but its not like your bills are going to change noticeably, i dont really know whats wrong with plasma people on here dont seem to like it for no reason yet stated, based on what i know led is a type of lcd, just it is back lit by led lights and is supposed to be the best in image quality and energy efficiency. plasma is going to be cheaper though it has same if not better image quality its not verry energy effecent (i dont know by how much though) and regular lcd is pretty energy efficent like led but not as good, but its image quality is the worst.

all my friends play on non samsung TVs (both LDC and/or LED) and they have no problem with the lag. i reasearched it a ton last year and found a bunch of forum discussions, the verdict seemed to be that for some unexplainable reason only Samsungs get this.

there is even a 'game mode' option but it doesnt help that much. its a bummer cause otherwise i play cod on an old square tv and dont get the nice HD

not really, newschoolers has a pretty good spectrum of knowledge. and since we're likely in a similar position as OP we could provide insight into relevant things that a review may not cover.

HOWEVER, obviously consult internet reviews as well because those guys know more of the tech stuff

can't go wrong with a samsung lcd. personally, i'd avoid plasma and led tvs can be expensive. or just wait for oled or 4k technology to become mainstream.

alright, just want to know about samsungs led's. there is a good price on their 40 led 5000 series at costco. want to know if they fixed the lag in the led. if you don't know, ill just look it up.

Modern plasmas have no problem with burn-in compared to the earlier models. Don't pause video games on the screen for an hour or more and you're fine. Also best color reproduction. Best TV's available are the several year old Pioneer Kuro's that retailed for over $10k new. Don't get fooled by 120hz and 240hz and not all LED TV's are alike (edge lit, backlit, color backlit, etc.)

Although pricey, crutchfield has good write ups on this type of stuff. Same with Sound and Vision.

None taken. And I am doing my research. Most places are just that, reviews. On NS, an open form, you can ask the "reviewer" a question and most likely get a timely response. Whereas when you are reading say amazon.com reviews you could ask a question and that person could never check it to respond. Nor do they care. On NS, members contribute and usually try to help other members.

This is part of my research, fuck the patriots. temple.

I wasnt ragging, just explaining why I made the thread. And yes, Samsungs have lag and suck for video games. LCD is good and LED probably isnt worth the money. Plasmas have burn and energy problems. All things I did not find in my search for reviews.

I have a 4 year old plasma and it looks better than my friends 1 year old LED-edge-lit 120hz LCD. Blacker blacks, more vivid colors, etc.

Id like to spend $400. But I could dish out $500, I just dont see a point in spending the extra $100. around $300 would be ideal.

what do people think of the Elite TV company manufacturer? overpriced maybe? their equipment is quality for sure. might be worth saving up for...

Elite used to be Pioneer which previously made the best TVs available. Apparently now it is owned by Sharp. Probably still very high quality product.

Saved up for 3 months did a lot of research and got one of these from best buy for $409

46inch LCD 1080, 4 HDMI ports, no internal wifi/smart tv. I didn't want that because it costs more and i just wanted a fucking large screen to play xbox on, which has netfix, dvd player, hbo go, etc. (anything you ever need for movies)

Insignia is a good brand because it is the same manufacture as Samsung (which makes the illest but most expensive) so its like 80% samsung parts or some shit like that.

LED is sick but honesty a 1080 LCD looks fine, but might not last as long?
as for 3D tvs, fuck that gimicky shit. this dumbass kid i knew bought one for $1000, it was a 47in (little bigger than mine, but $600 more) He hated the way the 3D looked and never used it. So he basically was out $600. I used the 3D a few times and it was ok. Games like Gears of War 3 are 3D compatible, yet you really don't notice it.

Samsung, viszo, Insignia, Sony and Aquos all make sick stuff.
I'd recommend buying from best buy, costco or a place that specifically sells electronics. Not from Walmart.

sorry for the double post. But I forgot to say fuck plasma tvs. They have the fastest refresh rate (good for games) but they won't last long and they take up a SHIT TON of electricity. They actually heat up the room if on too long.

Panasonic 42" plasma TV. One of the best deals out there. Just because plasmas are cheap, doesn't mean they are crap. Don't listen to kids in this thread who haven't even bought their own TV. The main thing LCD/LED has over plasma is the elimination of glare in sun-filled rooms. Other than that your just paying more money for a newer technology and have to worry about specs like refresh rate and so on.

If you have cash to burn excessively then look at LCD/LED, but if you want a really nice TV for a decent price to plasma. Oh, and try to buy it at Costco.

Go with LCD and get a sharp I have a sharp thats a 32 it was like $350 two years ago still working awesome I use it pretty much every day since I got it.  colors are still super bright.  also Sharp was the first company to make LCD's in calculators so they kinda know what they are doing.  I say stick with sharp if you want a good TV that will last.  My brother is just about to be getting a sharp 3D Quattron 80" TV I cant wait to game out on it.  It's gonna be 80" of pure awesome gaming.

Get a second hand Pioneer plasma, there was a reason they were so expensive. The color reproduction on those things is perfect, the blacks are deeper then an gay mans anal passage, the picture quality truly is better then the sun setting over Charlize Theron. If you don't have the room get the LCD Kuro, the may be bulky but they have black levels that rival most plasma's. Pioneer Kuro's are so good that they have gotten me laid on multiple occasions.

What the hell is with people who have no idea what they are talking about ragging on plasma tvs? I have owned a 50" Samsung plasma for the past FIVE years with NO problems. My roommates have left video games paused on it for HOURS. When that happens I have seen images "burn" into the screen but it always fades away after a couple minutes of changing it.

Plasma has better black reproduction, as it is the only "true" black. When a plasma tv displays black it is actually displaying nothing, ie black. An LCD has to turn lights on the try and create black with lights, creating a not real black. That is the best I know how to describe it.

AND my old roommate was the most hardcore gamer you'll meet, mainly COD. He played the shit out of that TV and had no complaints at all.

PS: I bought a "power conditioner" with it for like $80. It is supposed to help regulate the power being supplied to it. Normally in your house when you do little things like flip light switches and turn other things on and off it sends a fluctuation through the whole house. The conditioner takes those fluctuation out, and should in theory help your TV last longer.

Again, I have had my plasma for five years and it is fucking awesome. When I do get another TV I will be looking at plasmas because I am completely satisfied.

Also let me elaborate on this:

Watching a Pioneer Kuro is like angles jizzing over your eyeballs.
Kuros were actually blacker when they were on than other TVs were when they were off.
When it was released there was no meter on the market that could measure its black level.

if you are buying it from bestbuy, i'd definitely recommend getting a 4 year protection plan. i got a dynex 32 lcd 3 years ago when lcds were gaining popularity. One day over the summeri just turned it on and half of the screen turned yellow. brought it to bestbuy, got 400 for store credit, saw a samsung LED on sale for 300. i couldnt spend the extra 100 on anything else so i got another 4 year protection plan with this tv! the cycle goes on.

Sharp aqous is by far the best. We have had sonys samsungs and sharps adn the aquos out performs all of them no problem. Samsung would be next and then sony. Our oldest sharp is a 46" 1080 we bought 3 years ago and it still looks great.

dumbest post ever. led is a type of lcd, and true black is the absence of light therefor you tv would have to be made of tiny black holes to achieve this.
