Okay, so I've never used it, and I guess I'm kinda confused on how it works. When you buy something off it, do you then play that game off of steam? Please explain how that works. And also the game I'm looking at can be bought off Amazon or steam, what would the difference be and what do you recommend?

You buy it through steam, then can play it offline or through steam, which would allow you to play with your friends. But fuck it, you don't need to buy anything to have fun on there. Just get tf2.

Portal, Portal 2, Splinter Cell, and Counter Strike GO

@OP, steam is basically like the iTunes store for games. Along with multiplayer they have amazing deals and you can read reviews of games, browse screen shots, and gameplay vids.

yeah you can do that, but you have to re-install all your games on that computer.

Basically its an itunes for games, and just keeps everything simple and organized.

I think I have around 3-5 accounts, but my main account has something like 82 games owned... its kinda sad...

BUT DEM STEAM SALES!

Let me explain it this way OP.

Steam is the provider. You download the game from the Steam to your PC. Many, if not most steam games utilize Steam works for online components. There are a few, however, that use games for windows live or other third party services instead. Anyway, hope this helped.
