I agree with the whole -adding a shitty filter to a photo doesnt make it good- side of this debate. However, the camera on an iphone is quite sub standard (compared to a DSLR) adding some contrast and messing with the colours can make a substandard photo look actually pleasing. I use instagram because im at university and cannot take the photos i would with a DSLR. I used to be able to control WB, shutter speed, fstop, etc(even picture control) but now i can just add a stupid filter to a picture of a tree and be on with my day. Nobody using instagram is set out to take good pictures. nobody actually cares about the quality of the photo, but what matters is more of the subject in the photo.
Also the whole social media thing, im following famous accounts like redbul and jiberish. its nice to see what they are doing as well as friends.
Most of all its up-to-the-minute photo sharing that everyone is using.
