How's hitch hiking on the powder highway?

I'm trying to throw together a quick plan for a spring break trip out to BC to hit a few places, but since I'm a baller on a budget, I'm trying to cut costs wherever I can. I'm probably gonna fly into Calgary cuz it's the cheapest and then bus it somewhere, and hopefully hitchike from then on. I'd like to definitely hit revy, fernie, probably whitewater, and depending on how long I wanna stay at those two or three I may head out to the island/whis to meet with buds.

Basically my first question is what's the situation with hitch hiking in the interior? Do people actually get picked up? I say this because I've hitchhiked from van to whis no problem, but where I live (NW ontario) it takes forever for someone to grab you.

Also is there some kind of package deal for passes (eg. if I buy a week pass to revy, I can use it at whitewhater) to interior resorts? It doesn't have to be for the hills in my example.




Thanks for any help you guys can give, and if you have suggestions on some lesser known places to rip lemme know.

Can't really help you for the highway thing.

But I'm heading to revelstoke for the winter, I don't know where I'm gonna live by no but If you want Pm like a month before you're coming and If I have a place to let you crash I'll let you know.

I have two friends (girl) who did hitch hiking from montreal to vancouver in the summer, thay had a small bag and a longboard.

Hitching is pretty good in the kootenays for the most part. That being said there are some areas that are a bit more annoying than others. If you have a lot of shit with you it might be a bit tricky.

@drail: planning on carrying a larger packsack (probably my climbing pack so it can fit a few changes of laundry and my boots.) so sounds like im set.

I've done a fair bit of hitching in that area. Not super far into the interior, mostly between Banff/Calgary/Golden. Calgary to Banff is by far the shittiest, but Banff to Calgary is super easy. Past Banff wasn't bad either. The biggest tips I have are don't have too much stuff, the fact that you'll have skis is already a negative, but nothing you can do about that. I wouldn't want to do it with more than a ski bag and a larger back pack.

The single best thing you can do IME is have a sign saying where you're going. As I got more experienced my signs got more badass too. Started out with no sign, then signs that said where I was going which helped. Best sign I had was when I was going to Golden, all it said was :

Golden
I have oreos

Was walking out of Banff and didn't even make it to the highway before someone stopped.

Respect. Thanks guys for the more info. I'm gonna have to buy big ol climbing bag or something I guess then, don't plan on bringin a lot. Just skis, boots, maybe a change of clothes

When you say spring break do you mean reading week? I'm probably heading from Calgary to Fernie on family day weekend, as long as the highways are drive-able.

Yee, reading week. Things have kinda blossomed into a bunch of people wanting to come and drive out there, but we'll see who follows through. I'm still goin regardless. We should hook up for some shred (or a ride if I end up hitching) in ferndawgy.
