Why do we need this?

Pretty sweet actually. Would consider if i had an iphone. It's not that much bigger than normal cases anyway.

The memory thing in particular is what I find impressive, especially as Iphones have pretty low capacity. The battery is nice but not essential.

I bought a small/sleek device so I can put it in my jeans and not be uncomfortable and/or look ridiculous.  Not so I can put a gigantic case on it.

More battery means more efficiency - you don't have to recharge as often.
More storage means you can record more videos.
And the more powerful flash, that's just nice.
