College Majors

general business is a ok majro nothing wrong with it. If you are go with an accounting minor or economics something that makes you more appealing that other general business majors.

Finance/Econ with a minor in History/Psych. I am not done yet but its a pretty sweet stuff to study and I am sure I will find a job when I am done.

honestly man just do what you like, thats how you make money. You do what you like. There is more to it than that but you need to be in a field that you enjoy to excel.

Major does not matter.

Started out as Business Finance, Switched to Marketing, then to General Business. After that went to Advertising and Public Relations. Graduated in 2011, 6 months later I am working as a recruiter and doing nothing I learned in school...

But then again I hate my job and wish I was doing graphic design, what I studied.

Yeah not really concerned all too much with the starting salary or what not because if youre good at what you do youll be rewarded but just want to get good job/good company. Just wondering what companies and businesses out there are looking for in there college grads.

"Bachelor of Science Culinary Art Management" is what my major is. Basically my dream is to one day own my own restaurant / run the kitchen and be a co-owner of the place

Getting my Bachelor of Arts for Geography in a College to University transfer program and a teaching degree along with History and Social Studies as minors.

Get internships. Forget what you major in. If you wanna go into marketing, just get internships. Real work experience is more important than any degree. Obviously you need the degree. But real world experience is most important.

IMO Most companies are looking for the right person. If I was hiring someone I would be more interested in the persons work ethic, drive, and personality. Coming right out of college you dont know what you wanna do and dont have the experience to know. Its who you are that would get you hired and who you know that will get you in front of the employer. And who you know can come from internships.

Mechanical Engineering. If you're still interested in business, dual major M.E. and business, lot of colleges offer it. 5 year program. I say mechanical engineering because its the most versatile out of school.

After my internship this summer, I came to the conclusion that everyone who's a VP or makes a ton of money in an engineering firm has both degrees, or at least a masters in business. If you're a straight engineering major, you can hit a limit in pay (still a lot) much easier than if you have a business background as well.

Engineering degrees will give you the best chance a job out of school. The pay will also be much higher than other degrees. This is all GENERALLY speaking, there's always exceptions.

I'm 25, seen what all the kids i went to high school are doing now, as well as seen whats going on job wise currently for juniors and seniors. Just a business degree is fine, its just that everyone has one. Guys who get jobs right away are really good at what they do, have the "right" personality, and probably have a dad/uncle/friend that got them the job. Out of the most common majors, the easiest ones to get a job from what I've seen would be:
1. Engineering - any kind
2. Software/Programming stuff
3. Marketing - easier if you're a hot girl, not so much as a guy
4. Business

I'm a Senior management major in Miami University's business school. I am opinion is biased as our business school does extremely well (top 20 business school). We just had our career fair which brought in 250 companies, mostly want business students. Some companies like PWC, KPMG, PNC, and P&G do a LOT of recruiting here which makes it easier for us to get a job.(Once a week KPMG supply's our entire business school with free pizza and free swag to get us to consider them).

Management majors are interesting as they really aren't focused on one specific area. However, I've noticed that a lot of top companies are doing these "leadership" or "management" programs for recent grads. In these programs, its usually a 2-3 year rotational program introducing you to many aspects of the business, then at the end of it, you pick a managerial position in one of the areas you liked best. Nielsen does this as well as Nestle.

I would look into Supply Chain Management if they offer that major at your university. The classes are hella interesting and there are tons of jobs out there for it. Every company wants to know how to move goods or products as smoothly and efficiently as possible. If you're good at it, you can make boku bucks.

My recommendation is try to get the best internship as possible. I got a job offer from mine, and am using it as a back up while i pursue some higher-end jobs.

Definitely this. If you enjoy what you do, you'll work harder than others, you'll know your professors better, have more connections and all while enjoying yourself. That is the best way to differentiate yourself.

Casino Management

Some great advice so far, ive been thinking about a dual major in an Engineering field because those seem to be on the rise but are also very competitive. Internship wise it is definitely a necessity these days and am going to start applying hopefully clinch one this summer but still looking into what would suit me best.

Okay, let me rephrase what I meant. Major doesnt matter if you are not an idiot. Dont pick English or history unless you want to be some kind of professor/writer. Pick a major that you can generally relate to any profession. Then major does not matter.

Another thing to remember is that you are probably not going to jump into your life long career right out of college. They say that our generation will actually have 4-5 different careers before settling into one. So try different opportunities and find out what you like and dont like.

As Long as you don't get an Art History degree you should be fine. No hate on the people who do get those because it's their passion but real talk it's one of the most difficult fields to find a job in even if you have a degree

The reason business majors arent doing well is because that field attracts unmotivated people. Kids from upper middle class families that are lazy and don't know what they want to do just settle into a business degree by default, cause it sounds like a money maker, and is generally quite a bit easier than a science degree. But if your motivated to do business than I wouldnt worry about all the other people with business degrees, your already leagues ahead of half of them

geology is the highest paid bachelor degree you can get. plus its really interesting stuff that gets you outside doing neat things.

It seems like everyone wants Comp Sci. Engineering is always a good bet too.

what this man talks about with your school having relationships with potential employers is completely true.


when evaluating what college to go after make sure to find what companies actively recruit their graduates. I know i wouldnt have a job lined up with the company i do if i were at a different school.
