Looks pretty sweet but I doubt it will surpass iOS6. I won't give up my iPhone for it but I'm pretty impressed compared to the old blackberry crap they've had

I'm going to bump this thread.

The release date is going to be January 30th!
Launch event will take place simultaneously in multiple countries with new BlackBerry 10 platform and first two BlackBerry 10 phones officially unveiled.

I'm sure there will be some neat OS features that haven't been revealed yet.

According to sources, the browser will beat every single browser out there.. Including your desktop browsers.

Today leaked pictures of the all-touch device were leaked!
Looks mad sexy and I'm sure it wont feel cheap like Samsung Galaxy devices and the screen wont crack at minimal impacts like the iPhone5..

Yes BB does currently suck compared to other platforms, I never said they were good at the moment. Wait until January 30th though..
BlackBerry is bringing what they call a "mobile computing platform".. I'm expecting something pretty cool in my opinion..

I don't know why you'd want a duopoly between Android and Apple where they control everything. Having a third player will drive inovation, and so far Windows phone hasn't done much of a good job.

blackberry really needs to step their shit up with this or they're gone. windows phone is getting more and more prominent, some people hate it because of the unfamiliar ui but you can't deny the fact that it's growing way beyond blackberry. i prefer android because it's open sourced and there are many options to make the phone work the way you want it to, and i'm not only talking about the "ohhhh customizable homepage" that some guy will probably bring up. I doubt bb 10 will be like this.

I've had the same one for two years and don't have problems with it.. I'm waiting for the BB10 release to upgrade.

Also, there should be some pretty heavy marketing coming up as this is RIM's last chance and they really can't blow it with bad marketing.

That just looks like the back of the iPhone 5 for some reason, only the glass and aluminium have switched place.

Also how can you tell from pictures it will be better then something in a drop test?

those guys in the video were so irritating I stopped watching after a few minutes and what I saw was not impressive at all, you can do the same things as the peak feature and bb hub with iPhone/android. From what I watched it seems like bb is a little behind on the technology. This is just my opinion based on the first few minutes of a 15 minute video

The glass doesn't go all the way to the top and bottom of the device like other devices. The impact will get absorbed by the other material before the glass.
I'm just speculating though..
We'll see what happens.

The rest seems to be plastic, plastic indeed takes most of the impact, but it deforms on impact, creating stress on the entire edge of the screen, the only weak point of Gorilla glass.

deformation impact = absorbtion


think crumple zones on automobiles..

for the initial impact something that crumples is indeed much better, i for one am pumped for the new blackberry, it will take a lot to bring me back from apple, they really need to step their shit up, but this is a step in the right direction.

Like I said but : all the plastic will deform and will push against the glass.
I have worked for a company that made a product with a glass screen with plastic all round it, after countless of drop tests with the screen breaking we finally came to a solution and that was a titanium ring around the edge of the glass.

Think about a wooden picture frame, if you drop it the wood will absorb the impact but it will deform slightly in doing so causing the glass to break.

yeah, i understand that, there has to be a balance between crumple/strength. vibration/force transference between two materials can cause things to break as well. i think what blackberry has going on with their new phone is a pretty solid solution, obviously i havent felt/used/dropped/etc it, but from what i can see it looks good, and its a nice balance between the iphone's edge to edge glass, and the plastic backing found on many (all?) of the android phones. ive watched/heard of far too many of the iphone 4/4s's breaking the screen on the opposite side that had impacted on being dropped.

dont get me wrong, i LOVE my 4s, the only thing i worry about is breaking one of the two glass faces haha. i love the form and design, and entire user experience, but i also used to be a huge blackberry fanboy, and i think this is a pretty solid phone being produced by blackberry, and could put them back in the game. assuming they have solid execution and marketing for their new device

Its only a matter of time before blackberry goes under. There stock has tanked and they are only relying on these phones that are so far behind androids and the iphone. Even if there technology is somewhat equal they treat it like its the newest best thing ever, when its been out for a while now. Another major problem with RIM is that NO ONE watns blackberries anymore. Everyone wants the iphone or a droid if thats the way you swing. I met a girl who was legitimately embarrased to use her blackberry because it was so old...she was a bitch but just shows the image they put out right now

Their stock rose 6 percent recently ($14 right now, WOOO).. It hasn't tanked yet.
Android and iOS will be behind.
The QNX software kernel used in BB10 is more powerful than iOS and Android's soon outdated software. BB has completely redesigned their software around QNX which is the only highly robust, real time multitasking software that is used in tons of cars, medical equipment, casinos, fighter jets, and nuclear power-plants.
RIM will license their BB10 software to the automotive industry.. they are going ahead of just making smart-phones and using QNX's capability for embedded systems to integrate many electronic devices together with BB10.

It will be more than a phone..
I'm sure they'll have most of the main apps out there. If I really wanted to play little games on my phone I would pic an android. BB10 is catered to people who want to get shit done..

getting shit done to you, and getting shit done as a business man/someone who deals with hundreds of emails/messages/whatever a day are different (i am talking messages that require well thought out and proper responses)

one of the benefits of blackberry was/is the data (message) compression, and security measures that blackberry used/uses.

obviously this could have changed and other phone companies may be using similar services now, i havent really looked into it at all, as i could not care less anymore to be honest. not to mention the compression is pretty irrelevant now that a base data plan provides you with what? a gigabyte of data? a few hundred, or even thousands of texts/emails/messages/etc arent going to do much more than a dent to that.


that being said, blackberries were never marketed to people wanting to play games/music/media/etc. blackberry had come quite a ways with os6(i believe) back when i still had my torch2, they had a decent blackberry app world, a music service coupled with BBM, amongst other things that were still in beta, which was also fairly easy to get involved with.

personally, that was one of my favorite features of the blackberry user experience, giving their users the opportunity to be involved with the development of "integral" or widely used apps, BBM, BBM Music, facebook, twitter, etc. and giving anyone access to the beta program, provided you agreed to fill out surveys and give feedback about bugs/aspects that could use improvement. not saying that other companies dont do that, but if there is a similar program with apple, i am not aware of it.
