Maybe this is just LA where the superficial live, but I'm going to assume it's bigger than that.
Yesterday I went to a LA Galaxy(MLS sucks I know) and some many people are fucking idiots trying to impress others by starting claps/chants. They don't care about the sport or the team, they just think it's cool to post pictures of themselves at a sporting event. I've had this at countless baseball games and a couple hockey ones as well. People in the USA are no longer true fans of their hometown team until they win something and even then they can't tell you anything other than the leading scorer or captain's name. People constantly take pictures of everything and are looking at their mobile more than the game they paid money to see.
In large contrast I will watch foreign soccer, whether it be English, French, Spanish, Italian, etc.. and the team could not be the best and the fans will still fully support their team and be actively engaged with the game.
Bottom line, don't go to a sporting event if your don't care about the sport or team.
