I think it might be more prevalant in the MLS, I am seeing the same thing happen here with Sporting KC who I don't follow at all. it seems that pretending to like soccer is somehow tied into a weird euro/global sort of hipster image that certain people want to project. its cool to like it because its kind of obscure

well the Sounders seem to be a model franchise of MLS so theres probably enough people in the area who actually like soccer to begin with buiying the tickets.
here it is people who have never played soccer, never been interested in soccer, likely don't know anything about the strategy of the game but like to dress up in scarves and stuff and sit in this section called 'the cauldron' where they do their best hooligan impressions. their 'passion' seems completely fake. even the team's name is a euro rip off.
