Toyota 4Runner or Subaru WRX

I'm trying to decide between these two, 4runner fits some of my needs of getting to trail heads and fitting more gear but I've always loved WRXs and it would be more fitting if I move to a city. I dont think I could go wrong ether way but whats your preference?

my preference: no more NS car threads considering 85% of the kids on here don't have their license and have no idea what theyre talking about

you want a good, informed opinion to go a yota or subie forum..your going to get nothing here but subaru nut sucking and kids talking about things they have no experience with

Me personally, I would like the WRX. Dont get me wrong 4runners are fucking awesome, Think I would just rather have a car than an SUV. I dont know shit about cars though so let the mechanics of NS shower you with helpful insight.

got a '00 4runner with 100k miles and a '97 with 50k and both run quitee beautifully. perfect car for the mtns/snow. 4runners dont fuck around. gas milage aint the best but fuck it. if you can get one before '01 thats when they stopped making them in manual transmission and then the car went downhill. now 4runners are huge japanese escalades or whatever. but before the 01's get on that shit!

4runner....idk how old you are or if you or your parents or whoever is buying your car but when it comes down to it the 4 runner is just way more practical. For one the wrx doesn't even get great gas mileage....yea its a lot faster but who really cares about that anyways. The 4runner is plenty fast and can handle way more situations on or off road. The WRX is just a sports car for the average douche or someone who can't really afford a nicer sports car. 4runner is way more reliable also.

Which year 4runner? They have changed quite a bit over the years. My mom has the new one in black and I slapped a Yakima fat rack on top and it looks badass, 4 runners 4 lyfe

WRX is a beautiful machine, it depends what you're looking for. I'd say get the WRX lower it, put it on some nice wheels, and you'll be good to go.

I drove my dad's 4Runner for a long time, it was the best car ever. Manual SR5 with 4W drive, so baus in all weather conditions

Yes instead of getting educated opinions on each of those forums, people post questions on here where kids openly admit that they don't know shit about cars, and others are telling teh kid to lower the wrx and put on low pros with rims..on a car that needs to get to the mountain

OP: I'd go with the 4runner. A fast car will more than likely get ya in trouble in my opinion. Yota can haul much more stuff, can be equipped into a better all around off road vehicle. It might not make ya look cool, but cool is a very relative term.

I'm 31, have been driving for 14 years been through two sports cars and 5 yota 4x4s, driven all over the east from key west to fort kent maine. Certainly not some clueless 15 year old jibber.

It is true that on the internet you have to weed through a lot of bullshit. But most of this site does have a drivers license, many users own or have access to a 4runner and/or wrx and do similar driving. Your immediate dismissal and accusations against members here are mostly unneeded. And name calling? nice one, were you born in 01?

if you lower it using coilovers then you can raise the car back up for winter and put winter tires on it, but this is also a dumb question because they are so different

I have a 1991 Toyota 4runner that was given to me by my parents a few years back. It has 320,000 miles on it and has had no significant problems yet. It handles great in the snow taking me to and from the mountains 100+ times a year and it also handles great in the off-road during the summer. It gets pretty decent gasoline mileage and I would highly recommend one to anyone. It is a great investment that will last and preform well.

4Runner. More practical, more space, and will kick the shit out of the WRX in the winter.


...this is coming from someone who has both a Toyota SUV and an STI, so keep that in mind. The STI blows massive dick in the winter compared to an 4WD SUV, even with snow tires, so I can't imagine the WRX is any better. Sure, it's fun to do donuts in snow-covered parking lots, but when it comes to actually driving in a snowstorm, you'll want the 4runner. Plus, you can throw your skis in the trunk.

you've been here long enough to know he's right in regards to car threads though.

When it comes down to it, ns will seemingly always back the subaru even if it's the least practical car imaginable for the situation.


My advice is to test drive them both as thoroughly as you can, and go from there. If you like the feel of a car on a test drive, you'll probably like it when it's yours.

I've had the pleasure of owning both - a '92 4Runner and an '08 WRX. I personally loved both for their own reasons, but without a doubt I would want the 4Runner for the winter. Sure it kind of blows cock as far as gas mileage goes, but that thing was a tank in snowstorms and I truly felt like I could get through anything safely. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my WRX and I have definitely found myself wishing I still had my 4Runner on occasions.

If I could have, I would've kept both. Cruising around in the WRX is fun as shit and I feel comfortable 90% of the time in the mountains/lowland snowstorms. There's just those handful of times that I wish could pop it into 4-wheel and plow anything.

So my opinion, 4runner if you're spending most of your time away from the city and in the mountains and WRX if you're mostly just commuting to work and skiing occasionally (my current situation).

Subie !! Hands Down. Iv owned 05WRX wagon, 03Evo and now a 2008 impreza 2.5.. Just to name the last few. But I live upstate NY, all of my friends live on farms and the 2.5 can go thru ANYTHING, iv gone thru snow up to the hood, came to a stop and took off from a dead stop without a prob.. Iv help pull people in their 4x4 trucks off the side of the road with my WRX. even if you get the regular impreza you'll be more then happy, and with a hatchback your boots stay warm :)

I have a WRX, and use my buddies's 4Runner a lot. I dislike my Subaru. Too damn small, too damn fast, too damn impractical. 4Runners can be tuned to be fast, can be modded to go anywhere, hell they can do both at the same time. WRX's have a wider wheel base, so unless you go steelies or snow tires, all seasons might give you some issues (god knows I did, pulled out 3x one year). I'm trying to sell mine currently.

Not true at all. The 4th and 5th gen are a little more "refined" than the 1st-3rd, but they're still built for off-road use. ATRAC in the newer ones is fucking AWESOME. It makes having a rear locker basically pointless unless you're crawling. And they made them up to 09 with a manual option, so check your facts.


But OP, it really depends on what you want. A WRX will be more fun to drive, but a 4Runner will get you anywhere and won't quit.

honestly, it's hard to tell you what to do since you haven't given us much information and the fact that they are two totally different cars. I've owned an FJ which is pretty similar to a 4runner and it was great, no maintenance issues, toyota's last forever, and it handled amazing in the snow so a 4 runner is a great option.

Everybody loves wrx's (including myself) and it's a great car, fun to drive (driven them plenty of times) and for a car they handle great in the snow. they look amazing and you can always get ski racks so you have more room for gear, the back seat isn't big so kinda sucks for your passengers.

with all this said you can't go wrong with either one, both have there ups and downs and really only you can decide. a wrx wagon might work better for you as well if you are worried about space.

They are 2 very different cars, if you want to pay a shitload for insurance and get similar gas mileage to something way more practicle and reliable get the sti. 4runners are proven to last forever, will never let you down, and are very capable in pretty much any conditions even in stock form. ive got a first gen 4runner (85) and wouldnt hesitate to take it anywhere around the country.

I have a WRX and i love it. I don't like the douchebag Subaru community but the cars are nice and have little problems from i have experienced. Its great in the snow as well and looks good with a ski rack on. Gas would be better than with the 4runner also. Parking in a city will be easy too. Downfall though, insurance is really fucking high since Subaru's are always in accidents and getting tickets for going fast. I got a speeding ticket in a bullshit way and it raised my insurance by like $400 but I'm getting it deferred so in a year it will be taking off my record and expelled from my insurance.

oh rry. they stopped offering them in manual transmission after the 3rd generation. 4th generation (2002-2009) only had 5-speed auto. SO CHECK YOUR FACTS, man!

Ah shit you're right. I swear I saw a 4th gen with a manual, but I probably got it mixed up with an FJ. Either way, newer 4Runners are in no way similar to an Escalade.

There's nothing a 4runner can do in the winter that a regular 2.5 impreza can't do ! Iv come to complete stops in the middle of huge hills with snow up to the head lights then started driving without a prob. AND the 4runner has more room, but it's only head room, asides from that their very close in size in side the cars.
