Yeah, I'll always tune into skiing's portion of the X-Games, but I'm getting real tired of the idea that a skier's full talent is based on one judge's score. I'm getting real tired of all the robotic skiers that competitions are generating. Finally, I'm tired of that fact that competitions sometimes means you will see less of a skier in one film or the other.
Back when I used to skate, I NEVER thought about the competitions. It was always "Have you seen _____'s video part in ______ ?" The video parts were almost the most refreshing thing to see because it almost always featured a great song that was perfectly executed to fit the rider's exact style. Fortunately, this is still the case in skating. However, skiing is a different story. Today, we see that the only one's busting their ass to make the best segment possible are also the ones that are never making an impression on the outsiders of our sport. "Have you ever heard of Bobby Brown?" Yeah." "Have you ever heard of Cam Riley? Nah." What the actual fuck, industry?
Fortunately, this always proves one thing to me. The kick-ass kids that are going out in the middle of the night to get one shot are always the ones who are in this sport for what it should be and that's the passion of landing the perfect trick. In a past conversation with Clayton Vila, I said that I will be the most stoked kid in our sport when I see Level 1 drop a segment like Flip.
So, industry, when will that be?
