The United States has always had the benefit of location. Look at europe, china, japan, and even indonesia during WWII. Damn near every major city got blown to bits. Had England dropped the bomb on germany it wouldn't be nearly as big of a debate because they each had already been bombing civilians for years. However since it was the US, which remained almost completely untouched after 1941, it's questionable.

Its good and its bad logic. Terrorism is somewhat of a different situtation the a bombs were dropped after 6 years of war. If terrorists were to attack it would be out of the blue. The japanese had absolutely no way of winning the war or stopping the bombs. America has fairly substantial defence mechanisms to stop a nuclear attack. And your 100% right, Im Canadian and i appreciate the vast majority the defence and wars you guys take on because it means that we dont have to. But many many projects done by America would absolutely horrify the american public and the free world in general.
