Building a smallblock

Anyone on here ever build up a smallblock chevy? Come spring i want to build a smallblock up to around 400hp in a 69 Chevy short box, wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks

Nah ha is rather have the satisfaction of knowing i built something bad ass myself, i have a few motor head friends i could ask but I figured itd never hurt to check on here

Mild performance upgrades... new cam, forged pistons/rods, AFR heads, edelbrock carb, MSD ignition, bored .03 over, and a flowkooler water pump... Dyno sheet says 345 horse with around the same in torque. More than doubled the power out of the factory, it doesn't take much.

Solid, I'm lookin to do heads, cam, roller rockers, carb, ignition, intake, maybe some flat top pistons, we'll see what ends up happening

well your first bet is to ditch the chevy motor and put a hemi in it. you would be much happier. or a 302.

On my bronco woth a 302 ive put new pistons crank cam in it so far. Kept the original heads. Im gonna put a serpentine system on it, EFI, and if i have the dough ill get new heads.

I'm not putting a dodge or a ford motor in a chevy truck. And a sbc is one of the easiest motors to work on, and I have the most exoerience working on them

it is VERY popular among drag racers, especially for older camaros and mustangs. people just like the ford or chevy motor better but they like the camaro or mustang body. so they keep that and throw the motor of their choosing inside of it.

^This guy knows whats up! With the forged rods and pistons though, I'd suggest either bringing the compression ratio up to at least 12:1 for the forged internals to be worth it or running a lower CR like 9:1 with some type of forced induction. Cast pistons typically work better when not seriously working the engine because forged internals expand more than cast. A little counter intuitive I know but unless you are constantly pushing the engine to its limits the forged pistons will not fit properly in the cylinder because the are fit to expand and therefor wont be worth it. Let us know how it goes!

Go with mounted rockers, rollers snap and dwindle to nothing after 600 horsepower is constantly fucking with it.

What I meant to say is I would be impressed to see 350 at 302 older v8 is not gonna make 400 horse without some serious upgrades

A 350 carburated smallblock will make 400hp pretty easily, my friends dad has a sbc in a 72 Chevy thats making 500 with stock ignition and electrical

I've seen dyno sheets, and this whole thread is about putting upgrades on a smallblock. My friends dad has a 383 stroker with custom head work and a lot of stuff he wont tell anyone about.

A 5.3L GM gen 3 small block can be boosted 12 psi to put out 580+ ftlbs of torque and 594 hp. The limtits of the iron block could handle over 1000 hp

We have a 351W in our mach 1 stroked out to a 408 making 650+ without nitrous. its in the 950 range with nitrous

My dad builds them for a living. Well Chevys in general. Right now he's in the process of building a 442 in a 55 truck. All I know is he strips everything from the block when he starts and builds from the bottom up. Every dyno run he's had 400 bhp or more.

I still want to see where you pulled 320 out of your ass... Where does it say that WITHOUT MAJOR UPGRADES BOLD BOLD ITALICS ITALICS that you can't possibly get past 320 horsepower? I believe that the number came out of the deepest darkest crevice of your rectum and that you had to wade through some serious shit to pull it out.
