The only disadvantage to using latex is the learning curve. If you already typset equations using LaTeX then you will make stuff faster than word on your first go. It will only take you a few articles before you are working more efficiently in LaTeX. It takes care of EVERYTHING. Separating your document into sections, numbering sections, equations figures, etc. cross refrencing figures, citations. There is just no comparison between word and LaTeX.
The best part though is that you don't need to dive in headfirst. With exams coming up and stuff you probably don't want to waste time learning LaTeX right now.However you can get (most) of the benefits of LaTeX and still have a childlike environment similar to word. All you need to do is download "LyX", it's totally free. Then you can drag word to the trash because you will never use it again.
