"Occupy Movement" turns 1. Have they accomplished anything?

I realize NS isn't the best place for political shit, but there's definitely a couple people on here who know their shit and will have valid opinions.

I stopped paying attention to Occupy a while ago. Frankly, I don't believe that what they are doing is going to change anything, there needs to be a strategy there that's more pro-active. Mostly, because the issue is so complicated that a protest (however long) isn't really going to do much.

So here's my question: Has the "Occupy Movement" actually accomplished anything? If so, what?

I don't really have an opinion on the matter; like I said, they aren't doing anything that I've felt a need to pay attention to (the problem right there?). I just want to read some responses from some people that might know a little more about it than I do.

Nothing significant accomplished. They raised awareness about issues on Wall Street, but were so fucking annoying that people just started to ignore the situation all together.

we're talking about it arent we? the movement spread to 10's of countries throughout the world. if you view it from rush limbaughs eyes they were all stupid socialist spoiled kids, if anyone was there they would have seen they were actually some really intelligent people but like anything else a few give them a bad name

Not as much as they should have.

The media portrayed them terribly. Some of the worst, most biased coverage ever from all networks.

Good message for the most part, but they got the wrong address! Occupy Capitol Hill! That is where the actual legislation to fix this shit would happen.

Like most things there was a problem but what went down took a turn for the worst. Many people were protesting that knew what was going on, had legitimate concerns, and understood the situation. A lot more people were protesting simply to protest or going after the wrong people.


Hearing people bitch about capitalism as the root of all their problems made me want to slap some bitches. Also all the people that hate all corporations, or have that mentality.

People don't seem to understand the things that made this country great, the things that have people climbing fences, crossing oceans on shady rafts, and all sorts of other things. America is or maybe was the land of opportunity. People came here for the ability to make it with some hard work and a little luck. In America, anybody could become somebody if they were willing to work their ass off. That wasn't the situation in many of the places they were coming from. Americans also enjoyed many freedoms that people in their homelands did not.

It just sucks how fucking ignorant people are. The government fucks shit up, and then people are crying in the streets that the government should do more, and that the corporations are all to blame. If you want to talk about some sketchy shit involving corporations, look at the way the government is intertwined in so many of them. If you take away the ability to fail or succeed, what the fuck reason is there to try? If the governments going to bailout these companies that are sketchy as fuck, while your business that you work your ass of legitimately to keep going fails, what the fuck is that shit?

As far as freedoms, we vote them away in every election. If most of the world wasn't going down the shitters as well I'd start building my own raft just in case.

People seem to forget that if you take away the ability to succeed and fail, if you take away our freedoms as Americans, you take away the very things that made our country great. It just pisses me off.

Yea, people talked about it. Yea, it raised some questions - but how many people that were there, in the streets, even knew the reality of what the issues were and who was causing them?

See, I feel like the people who are intelligent enough to not only be pro-active and make change, but also be able to even devise a way to do so, were already aware of the problem.

I tried to start the discussion on the web forum they had set up for the SLC occupy movement. What are your demands? What do you want to accomplish? How are you going to do it? All I ever got back was "The system is broken". "People are greedy". I even got a facebook message from some organizer for the "movement" in chicago(? If I remember right), I guess he saw what I wrote somewhere. He couldn't answer the questions either, and he was supposed to be organizing the protests in a major city.

I just never understood what anyone thought was going to happen. I was excited to see if anything did, at the beginning, then I lost hope.

What sucks is that every misguided effort just discredits anything good. It's hard these days too because it's so easy to get the masses riled up about something and then spin them in whatever direction you want.

What you were saying about your questions reminds me of obamas campaign. Hearing ignorant people say "we want change" really pissed me off. I asked people, what particular changes do you want? What are the problems, and what do you think should be done? A lot of people couldn't even answer. Some people just went with the same shitty regurgitated thoughts that they probably didn't even understand.


So you want change? Well if you don't know what change you want, why the fuck do you want it, and why the fuck are you voting. Sweet Jesus. You have no idea what the problem is but you just want any random change for better or worse?

I feel like if any real movement comes up against the establishment it's going to instantly be written off because of things like the occupy movement, tea party... It will be incredibly easy for the media to spin when you already have so much bullshit out there. It could be the most legitimate and well thought out movement and people will still take away whatever shit spin the media puts on it.


Seems like it's almost impossible to get any real POSITIVE changes going down.

Totally unrelated. It scares the shit out of me to think that juries are made up of average everyday Americans. That seems like it would be an incredibly scary thought if you were sitting in court. Your fate lies in the hands your everyday people. Idk, that thought terrifies me. IF somebody goes to jail for the rest of their life or goes back out into the world depends on people who might not even know the capital of the state they live in.

I wish they would come back. There was a big camp in the downtown park a block from my school where everybody eats lunch, we used to fuck with those crackheads so hard.

I do not consider myself to be ultra conservative (in fact I only really go conservative on gun control and some economic policies), but the occupy movement is simply ridiculous.

Occupy is simply the result of the latest Gen X and Gen Y not knowing what to do with themselves without the powerful motivator of an enemy of the state threatening existence itself.

The soviet union falling was both a blessing and a curse for america. It might be until another power rises to the level of the US (right now china is probably 1/3 by most estimates; which is alarmingly high compared to 1/5 a couple years ago) to a near 1:1 level before people realize they need to do something.

I agree that it is at least in part, probably a large part, a result of people not knowing what to do with themselves. People have an ingrained need to be part of something - a movement, a subculture, whatever. We're freeskiers, for example. So I agree with you on that.

But the idea that people need some common enemy to see as an opposing force and rally around the flag to defeat that opposing force is silly. It's also destructive. A real capitalist should not be seeing this as a "their team vs. mine" scenario. I would also ask on what basis you're measuring China, because in a lot of respects they're much farther along than 1:3.

Politically speaking, no. The occupy movement does not and will not ever have nearly enough money to lobby in laws that will work in their benefit.

They did however raise awareness of the sketchy behavior going on behind the scenes by wall street and other businesses that have control of our economy and lobbying our laws.

i use common think tank figures for 1:3 in foreign policy and foreign affairs. 1/3 was a rough estimate averaged between GDP and UN weight, because since military apparatus is not actually a measure between nuclear countries anymore.

obviously normatively rally around the flag is not ideal. But cmon lets be real. a look at recent industrialized history tells a different story.
Jet engine, radio, computers, lasers, satellites, internet, plastic, nuclear fission all accelerated (if not wholly created) by war motivations.

ppl are lazy man. its the threat of death, or even more powerful imo, the threat that someone else will cause your death, that triggers our biological motivators.

Seems to me that they were just protesting because they had nothing better to do and just wanted money and job handed to them on a silver platter. Life's not fair. If you ask me, they should grow the fuck up and work for what they want.
But then again, I don't really know too much on the subject, so don't hate on me.

If they had got behind one message and platform and put people in office (like the Tea party did) they could have gotten real change. But it turned into a bunch of hippies camping in a park. It had potential... but nothing happened.

My dad is a pretty typical ignorant republican and his thoughts on it were, "if they are protesting the fact that middle and lower class citizens are getting screwed, why are they going around smashing windows breaking traffic and making it harder for us to not be screwed?" This was after the big riot in Seattle on May Day. Not my opinion, but it is an opinion that they elicited.
