Mountain Biking

I want to get into mountain biking and have no idea what type of bike/size/new or used. Any help would be great. I'm looking for something relatively cheap and if anyone is trying to sell anything near Columbus, OH, let me know.

I'm about 5'11, 195lbs for the sizing and I will be riding smaller hills in the midwest if it makes any difference in bikes.

what type of riding are you planning on doing?, more specific then "riding smaller hills"

Yeah i'm not very sure but I know of a few state park trails around here some of my friends ride and they got into a 100 mile race last year. I guess I'm just looking for something that is durable and versatile to do different types of riding since I don't know what I like yet. Thanks for the help though

I would say on a rough estimate, you would be on a 19 inch frame. But it really is hard to say. If I would have any advice for you, it would be to stay on a 29'' wheel set. The bigger rim gives you added traction and the rolling speed is better overall for x-country. Also, IMO a 29" hard tail rides just as well if not better than a 26" full suspension.

I was looking around today and bikes look to be quite expensive. Initially I was thinking a couple hundred (2-5) but it looks like for new that would not be possible, maybe not even used for anything worthwhile. I think I can rent bikes from my school so I might just start there and see how much I want to put into it.

+k, for the advice. Is there any disadvantages with the bigger wheels, like are they easier to bend if i start dropping small stuff?

Look into Giant Reign... there are different level of goodness... but any level will give you an awesome bike for the money... I Trail race and Downhill race... trust me i know this shit.... There are many good older bikes on KSL... but the Reign is awesome... also Trek's trail bike (Trek Fuel) is awesome...

They are actually stronger from a mechanical stand point. The bigger wheels distribute the weight better than a smaller wheel. But that all depends on the overall quality of the wheelset, which is usually the first thing I recommend to people or do on my own bikes. Wheelsets and hubs make a huge difference in the riding quality. Also if you buy a used bike, I would strongly recommend going and getting it tuned up at a qualified shop to make sure everything is in working condition and you didn't get ripped off.
