Well Newschoolers, I have returned after a 30 day point-proving hiatus. During this maternity leave, I watched Stept's new flick "The Eighty Six" and decided to make my annual review so here goes...
After having to restart the iTunes download numerous times and debating on whether or not to throw my computer out the window, I finally had the film in my hands. Words do not describe how anxious my mouse finger was to click the play button. The film starts out with, without a doubt, the most stylish, creative introduction I have seen in recent ski media. Word on the street is that they did it in one take so that's some impressive shit.
Cam Riley comes in right after the intro and delivers a jaw-dropping segment as we've come to expect of him. I had to rewind the movie about 5 times during that segment just to grasp what my eyes were taking in. Slow clap to you, Mr. Riley. I won't pull a chunky milk and spoil the whole movie by reviewing segment-by-segment, but you must know that Maks and Seany J blew my mind right after Cam. All I could say after was: We need more footage of Gorham and his roof-jumping antics.
The film is then followed by Stept's now signature filming/editing style. We see one of the coolest segments featuring everyone in the crew and the best competition segment I've ever seen. Anyone else get hypnotized by the song and the relaxing sound of skis slowly shooting out of the half-pipe? Beautiful. I might be going out of order (yolo), but we are then greeted with my favorite segment of the film: Shea and Chuck. I had been anticipating this segment the entire movie and every expectation I had was greeted and then passed. The creativity in these kids' minds really pops at this point and we see what a force these goons really are.
After a hilarious Parents segment, Vila drops his most skate-like segment yet (and most impressive). I fucking loved the music in this segment because the enormous flow it had with Clayton's skiing was fantastic. You don't see video parts like this everyday. You also do not see movie's like this everyday so fucking purchase this movie in any way you can! Sell crack. I don't care what you do, but buy this shit and tell your friends!
Overall: 10/10
Better than NetWork? No, but a very close second with Weight just barely behind it.
Best segment: Shea/Charlie.
Soundtrack? Awesome. If you complained about the music, you don't know good music.
Overall filming: 9/10. It was shaky at times, but, hey, that's what they're going for.
Should you buy this? Do you love your mom? Is Kate Upton going to marry me?
I think you know what you must do.
