How much footage do you get in a season(DSLR)? and organization?

I'm definitely going to need another hard drive(possibly 2 but at the moment I can double back it up to a friends). and I'm not sure what size to get, I was thinking 1tb but now I'm not too sure, I know it's not going to be the same for everyone but if nobodies getting anywhere near 1tb(or if everyones getting way over), how much media do you guys usually get in a season?(assuming you keep it ALL).

Also when organizing it into folders on your drive do you do it by date/rider/trick? etc. or do you have multiple folders for each and just copy over shortcuts?

I'd go for 2 or 3tb just since you can and its not much more.

some 2tb, and especially 3tb drives, are less reliable than 1tb. At least this was the case a year ago. I personally say 1tb, 2tb MAX. 2tb is a shit ton of footage to lose. Backup your stuff constantly if you go with a large drive. I run 2x1tb in raid1, and even my two 320gb data drives (music, documents, photos) are duplicated through raid1, so if one goes down, there will hopefully still be a copy left over.

So would 2 500's be a better choice? Or just stick to 1tb for not much more and get another soon? Also @1337 thanks, I wasn't aware there was less reliability at higher storage space, also sorry but I don't really know what raid 1 is? Thanks

RAID 1, also known as mirroring, is when your computer automatically writes data put on one drive to the other. There are other raid arrays (0, 1, 2...) that get into placing parts of data on multiple drives (file a, for example, is spread out on X drives so it can be accessed faster)

The other thing to consider is the speed of the drives. If you plan on just using the drives for storage get somthing like western digital Green drive. Either 1tb or 2tb depending what ypou can afford. Like said above a good way to go could be to get 2 1TB drives and have them in Raid 1 to protect yourself if there is a problem with 1 of the drives. If you plan on working directly off the drive. It becomes harder, you want at least a 10,000 spped drive to work off so maybe look for a 360Gb Western digital velocoraptor and then just get a slower 1Tb drive for storage.

However you do need to know how many drives you can instal. Full tower desktops obviously have more room but even mid towers can normally fit 5 drives so you should be good to go unless you already have 3 or more drives.

Regarding 3TB drives they often require an update for the motherboard to be read correctly so you may be best off sticking to 2TB drives

you've said this in a few threads, I've edited off of:

SSD via SATA
7200 via SATA
7200 via FW 800
7200 via (GASP) USB2.0

I've noticed decent, at best, increase than what you've been telling people. 7200 sata is PLENTY, hell, 7200 via FW400/800 is very common in this industry.

Well it will certainly work editing off a 7200 but if you were buying new why would you not want the fastest drive you can get?

Its all relative though, 4 years ago a duel core CPU was as fast as it came, and yes you could still use one now but you would be holding yourself back. Its the same with Hard Drives. Yes you can edit direct off a 7200 but you will not be getting the full potential of your CPU.

Overal I guess it comes down to what you want to spend. If your after cheap yeah get 7200 if you want the best get a SSD or 10000 drive.

Also just to add what you said about industry use, it depends on what industry you work in, I work as a 3d animator and you wont find anyone working off a 7200 drive for animation.

^Well animation is a whole different game. if you had said that earlier, I would have agreed!

10,000rpm drives have a much shorter shelf life and durability to them, dont they?

It depends on the drive you work on. If you go for a high end WD like a velocaraptor you wont find much differnce.

There was a time recently when SSD were thought of as risky to use. They had limited rewrites and were susepitable to failing. Now they are much better. If you ever get teh chance to work on a workstation with 2 SSD in Raid 0 you will never look at at 7200 as even a remote option again. Personally I do not use SSD in raid yet, but certainly will in my next build.

yeah, For what I do, 1SSD with my OS, Apps, and documents is fine. Everything else is raid1 via internal sata (5 drive bays all full, gotta love it!)

Im not trying to sound like a dick, but what the hell could you possibly shoot that takes up 3TB a season? Unless your shooting Raw, that doesnt sound right to me

Honestly dude, only RAID if you need too. This year (not last year, starting NOW) is my first year running a raid setup. A solid lacie 2tb quad interface drive would work fine for you. I filled a 2tb drive in about 8 months, but keep raw and prores, i definitely cleaned it out a bit but yeah still took up a ton of space. luckily, 2tb drives are < $200.

2TB drives are around 100.

I'm going to reassert that RAID 1 is inefficient and uneconomical. Time Machine is a safer backup system, cheaper, and if you use RAID 0 it's faster.

can you set it up so that time machine backs up a raid array set up in disk utility? I know disk utility sets it so that finder sees the raid1 array as one hard drive, does it doe the same for a raid0? (and would it consider a 2x1tb raid0 to be 2tb?)

so, 2x1tb running raid0, and a 1x2tb as a time machine for the WHOLE raid array (all of disk 0's AND disk 1's contents to that one 2tb drive)

Im running a lacie, 3tb hard drive with 7200 rpm, fire wire 800 as my work drive.

My workload goes like this: I record media on a portable drive 1TB, transfer a copy to my work drive. and work from there. Once everything is done with this project, I keep the project folder and media stocked until the time limit is done for a client to ask for re editing. Keep the final project on an other drive and store the raw footage until the drive is full and I then delete the oldest stuff.

fuck I need to have a better media management routine!

I have: 2tb portable drive, 3tb back up drive, 3tb work drive which I described earlier. how should I manage this to make sure I dont fuck up!

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...? Raid 0 has two harddrives taking one load, rather than two mirrored drives. It is still treated as a single drive, but they aren't mirrored between the two. So you get 4 harddrives in total, two pairs of 1tb each running Raid 0, and you back them up via time machine. I'm not sure if time machine is more cost effective if you go the Raid 0 route; I haven't crunched the numbers. Regardless, Raid 0 is a luxury at best; you can still get fast editing speeds without it.
