Help! Looking for a good Laptop for under $1000

Hey NS, I'm looking to upgrade my current laptop which is an i3 HP pavilion dv6. its an alright laptop but doesnt have the best processing power, especially in After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere pro where it runs really slow. Rendering takes forever even for short GoPro clips.

What I'm Looking For

i7 processor
At least 700 GB of memory
8GB of RAM or more
Any brand except Apple
screen size doesnt really matter

Or post up your rig if its relatively close to these specs, I just want a computer that will be really good for editing/using multiple programs at once (i.e. Photoshop, Premiere and iTunes)

Samsing series 9 is what i have. Its just over a grand by like 50 bucks after taxes. Or the series seven. Has everything except the ram you want, which you can upgrade for like 406 bucks and install your self. I have the series 9, with 8gigs ram, 750 gig hard drive, i7 processor, and its like a 15book in screen. Battery life is amazing and samsung displays are awesome as well. 2hdmi ports, 2usb ports, and a mini 19 pin vga out. ,

not 406 dollars.. 40dollars. and 15 inch display. sorry, on mobile..

So you'd rather have an Acer?

Strange demand, that said, get a Lenovo Thinkpad, the best quality laptops besides Apple in terms of construction and user experience.


It has only 4GB of memory but an upgrade is easy:
I'd advise you to buy more than 8GB RAM though.
At the price it is currently it would be silly not too.

And ditch the 4GB stick that comes with it.


Harddrive is only 320GB but, You could put a 1TB drive in the optical bay with the bay adaptor.



I hope I gave you some insight, yes it well be slightly more then a 1000 bucks but you want a lot.
And I wouldn't skip on anything just to save a hundred bucks or so.


And now go and google for your self.

I've heard good about the thinkpad y580. It's got a gtx660m graphics card (very good for a laptop, better than the 630/640/650m series) and an i7 quad core.

or the series 7 is good too

lenovo think pads blow. the specs and such may look decent, but their quality absolutely terrible... ive known too many people with them with broken keys, broken plastics, etc..

Do you really need a laptop, or could you work with a desktop and use your old laptop for travel.

If you went for a desktop you would be able to build somthing with almost double your specs for around $1000.

For $1200 I built this computer.

I7 3820
16 gig ram
Nvidia 560 2Gb Graphic Card
2 Tb hardrive.

If you went for somthing like that your workflow would speed up so much. The big things are the ram and graphics card for after effects and Premiere.

For both you want a card which is going to accelerate your workflow, the 560 or above will work for this.

For after effects its recomended you have 4Gb of ram per core, so witha quad i7 that would be 16Gb. But in my experience thats just enough and Im upgrading to 32Gb soon. If you buy 8Gb sticks you can buy two to start and get 2 more leter on.

Id recommend getting a desktop too. i5 quad core 2500k with a 560 ti 2gb and 16gb of ram would be good. Also make sure to get a fast hdd, not a 5400rpm but a 7200rpm one.
