I have been taking pictures at my local high school football games recently and have came out with some decent ones. But once the sun goes down, I'm fucked (slow lense). What do you think a decent lense would be for shooting from the sidelines would be? I was maybe thinking a fast 85mm?
If you could leave your recommendations, that would be awesome! Thanks NS!
also like i said i will be shooting from the sidelines so anything on the other side of the field will be blocked by the other players, and i can go up and down the sidelines as i please
85mm on a crop body (assumption) would be about 136mm, that's pretty tight, but it's a prime and you don't exactly have the ability to get closer/step back. I would consider a 70-200 f4l non-is, it's only $500, and yes it's f4, but the difference between f4 and 2.8 is only one stop. A good tripod will get you way more light than that extra stop of aperture will. So yeah, a 70-200 with a half decent mono/tripod is probably the way to go for now. Camera's have such great ISO performance these days that you could easily shoot at 3200+ at get useable results with a bit of de-noise and sharpening in post. So yeah, if you can find a bit more cash to get that, it will really pay off in the long run. L glass holds it's value WAY better than the cheaper crop bodied glass. And because your shooting a 'larger' format lens on a smaller format, you don't have to worry about corner sharpness like you do with full frame.
