Whats up with pros building huge jumps onto rails?

Why do we still have GIGANTIC jumps onto rails? And why sometiems do they build them on the outside of a set? I could do almost any rail that they do because they have the jumps so HUGE! Some of them are ABOVE the rail! Thats absolutely rediculous! The most it should be is about half the height. AT MOST! One third the height of the rail is a good height to have the jump without bein a pussy.

Well I could see a really wide jump onto a rail, because if u wanna spin onto the rail you could set yourself off axis on the side or something. Wider jumps give u more of a variation of different ways to hit a rail

I really hate really small narrow jumps onto rails, i feel like theres barely any room for error.

For sure wide jumps are cool.
I'm talking about tall jumps that are up to the edge of the rail. Thats how my mom would set them up.
And I do hit rails and I don't use giant jumps for whoever said that, and you can check it out in the Kapitol video if you want. I ride with snowboarders so no skiers build their giant jumps.

^ Yeah I def hear what your saying, theres really no need for making really tall jumps. I guess, if your a newbie and your worried about getting your tips caught on the rail, then u just dont know how to pop off a jump. But I would think to that if u make the jump so massive you could over pop onto the rail and set u way off axis

They aren't as bad as they used to be... actually, I think if you check most of the urban shots in most good ski movies nowadays you'll see hardly any lip. Big jumps are a thing of the past.

^For sure and to be fair I only started noticing this lately.
I showed what I was thinking were all these sick rails done by pros to my friends and they just laughed and pointed out how HUGE the jumps were.

Look at Forward, I think that video shows it the best. Some of the jumps they have are like ride-ons, they dont even hit it from the side, but straight on. Some of the rails are set up on the outside of the stairs too.

Forward was last year Ethan, I think the jumps are getting bigger as the rails start getting bigger and gnarlier.

bigger jumps, bigger tricks. Who is going to try and pop a 450 on the 'way up' to a rail? it seems alot more logical to me to pop the 450 and then land on the rail when you come down.

Footage of candide catching his head on the underside of a rail while spinning onto the rail would be pretty funny though

Huh?

NMK is definitely right. I hate watching people hit 'urban' rails straight on. You should have to pop to get on the rail. But alot of guys are doing this now.

The other thing is how skiers only build a lip in one little spot at the to of the stairs or whatever. If you watch snowboard films you see the lips are even all the way across the top of the top step so it looks like theres no lip at all and the stairs are usually clean or at least exposed.

There gona build it whatever way they feel comfortable with. If there isn't much inrun, they need to make the jump so its able get them on the rail with minimal speed.
Does it really take away from the rail? I dont think so.

i agree with levin here. jumps on to rails should only be olli pads, as you might see in snowboarding. sure you can't get as much pop as a boarder can, but it looks SO much better when it is just a little olli pad. yeah and clean off all the stairs of all snow. make it look good visualy and when you clean the rail it will look even better because you took the time to care about what your shot looks like.

and yeah blake has mad pop, so does max peters for that matter.

best reply ever from d-loc. Mine was going to say:
270 on is pretty fun but not when you eat the rail. I agree with you on tech rails, anything kinked ect. should have an ollie pad only while raised straight rails and boring ones should have a bigger for more variety.

uh I think it depends, you need more speed if teh jump is smaller, cause you need to actually get ontop of the rail... I think that it just depeends on teh setup, and skill levle.

a big jump is ok in my book as long as there is a big gap to the rail, so that you can do gnarly disasters and spins on and stuff

Its super hard to find speed, snow, etc... when there is no snow on the groudn and the rail is against a building or something. i agree that small jumps are better but i would say doing a rail with a step on/big jump is better than not doign the rail at all

one thing, when the jumps are so low, as i have noticed it happening in teh new snowboard movies, if teh rails is steep you actually dont need much pop and they aer all just gapping ten feet down teh rail.
what do you mean by the jumps are beside the rail?
do you mean it is past teh beginning of the rail on the side(so the rail is shorter).?

well there are a lot of things to considerate.
if you dont have much speed, youre gonna need a bigger bump.
i'm all for small bumps, but sometimes its just not possible.
and to whoever was comparing it to SBing...thats not reallty a fair comparison because SBers should be able to pop about twice as high as a skiier.
and the thing about making the pad really wide so it looks smaller (vertically) is stupid, thats llike cheating, making it SEEM smaller.
but yes, the smaller the bump, the better it looks

watch snowboard movies, they dont even use jumps, the in run just goes right to the stairs (if its urban) they just pop right onto the rail, it looks way better cuz there is not a huge pile of snow at the top of the stairs.


ive got a dope one (talking about run in ramps)....ill get pictures soon...its six feet high and six feet tall with a ten ft drop ramp

Ok... For everyone who is talkign about 270s and 450s onto urban rails... WHERE is this happening? a 450 onto an urban rail would be sick no matter what, but still the jump does not need to be more than half the height of the rail. Think about it, if the rail slants down, then if its half the height, you still only have to pop very minimally to get on. 1/3 the height and you have to pop a little bit more, but still not a ton. There is NO excuse for having a jump onto a handrail that is larger than half the height of the rail. Unless your penis fell off and you grew a vagina.

I think some of you are confusing 'urban' rails with park rails. Having jumps onto park rails is expected and understandable. You can spin 450's or whatever on but nobodys done a 450 onto a urban rail. And even if they were it would still look stupid if they hit the rail straight on from a huge kicker.
