The Eighty Six Glass List?

Sorry to make another thread so soon but I just watched the Eighty Six by stept and it was UNREAL, definitely my favorite ski movie I've seen. The Glidecam shots are soo good, and the editing is super clean (I love the skipping effect that they do alot throughout the movie).

But to cut myself off from rambling about the greatness of it Im wondering what they used for lenses?
It seemed like they were doing ALOT of handheld and it almost seemed like their were two levels of wide angles, 1 was like an 8mm or something Wide as shit (I assume their on APS-C Sensor) they used this to get right up on the rails, it seemed to have alot of distortion. then the other was like a tokina 11-16? It didnt have as much distortion but it was pretty wide They used both the widengles quite a bit!!!

Then their was also alot of shots on what i believe was a 50mm lens and also like a 70-200? then like a canon L zoom? but i want to know what they where using for lenses because I want to buy whatever the widest lens they were using in the movie, because it looked hella clean and was like perfect in what it could get. Then i want to know the second widest lens because I want to compare it to the widest.

I already tried to email alex 5 days ago and he didnt respond yet so I thought some of you might know what they were using? Kind of a stretch but maybe?

tokina 11-16 for sure, maybe some sort of fisheye also, definitely a 70-200 and i know they use a canon 300mm L too. not sure about the mid range though.

Im positive they use at least these lenses: 100-400, 70-200, 24-70, 24-105. I know there is more, but those are the ones ive seen.

they shoot with all the stuff above, a 30mm 1.4, and some other shit. a LOT of 100-400

they also shoot ONLY on 7d's. NOTHING else.

Just while we're on topic level 1 shoots mostly on 5d mkii's (this year they got mk iii), an FS700 now, Ex1's, and they used to shoot on 7d's aswell.

glass: 24-105, 100-400, 50 1.4, 15mm 2.8, 11-16, 70-200, 100 macro, and other lenses

Thanks! When you say they shoot on stuff above a 30mm does that mean that thats there widest lens? no fisheyes or wide angles?

i think he meant the stuff listed above. and I know they used to film with a few camcorders, but I think its only 7Ds now. I think they should upgrade to fs100s soon. especially with the price drop.

kind of hard to shoot on a 5d if you use a tokina 11_16 for all your glidecam shots

you can use it at 16mm. but yes they shoot exclusively on the 7d

L1P does not shoot "mostly on 5d mkii's..." more like they shoot all on the EX-1 (everyone in their crew has one) mixed in with some dslr footage (Berman shoots timelapses on the 5d mark II(III now)), you are correct on the fs700.

for sunny they did shoot their urban mostly on 5d's

and their movies are mostly urban...

I have worked there all summer, so i would know...

FWIW, im not a fan of sony's exmor sensors overall look. DR is decent, but colors and "look" are off to me

CC does not fix sharpness, color rendition, and various other details caused by the sensor (and part by an AVCHD codec)

haha right. I am sure they shoot all urban at 24p/30p. the mark iii did not come out till March 22nd (which means 60p wasn't available prior), availability put it beyond that even. so yeah, I would bet most urban was shot on ex-1's- not too much urban is stacked in April and beyond, but then again you "have worked there all summer".....

to be fair, i dont think they use that much slow motion with their urban shots. So 30p is plausible..


I know I wouldn't want to be shooting urban with a camcorder, but thats just me.

yeah i just watched the whole russia segment, and there was no paddle zoom shots, and there was barley any slowmotion, which Im guessing was 30p conformed to 24p then slowed down a little to like 90% because it was kinda choppy

not the camera, the lighting. a video is only as good as its lit. light is a huge factor with any kind of professional filming. i feel like everyone thinks a nicer camera yields a better image, but with poor lighting, any camera will look bad.

haha I would rather shoot an ex-1 than a DSLR in pretty much every situation. I've had both, and nothing can really beat the all-in-one package of the ex-1. talk about run-n-gun, you can shoot that thing anywhere anytime, with nothing more than what's already a part of the body. I wish more cameras moved back to this style as opposed to an ergonomic, pieced together rig.

I agree that in most circumstances, I would take a traditional camcorder over a DSLR. Im not sure about the ex1, but I know a 7D, T2i, etc has better low light performance than an HVX or HMC, so thats why I would want a DSLR for urban shooting. Plus, theres not to many instances I have needed to move around that much, so a stationary DSLR fits my needs the best.

For a park shoot, and for backcountry, I would much rather have a camcorder. I like the fact that they are just really easy to set up and that there is no lenses to buy, but some of these (HVX, EX1, HMC) are just getting outdated. If sony/panasonic came out with a camera like the EX1 but with 108060p, then I would seriously consider getting one. Not to mention, I like the fact that a DSLR can produce great stills. I know cameras like the HVX have like a timelapse mode, but it isn't up to a DSLR standard.

they have several, but mostly 24mbit AVCHD (the 50mbit XDCAM codec of the EX series is part of the reason why they were so highly regarded). There might be a Sony XDCAM with 1080p60 now (PWM-200?)

im not sure if they're released yet, but they both are in the making at least, i was reading on dvxuser about them. Unfortunately, like jamie said, theyre all avchd but ive grown to be okay with 24/28mbps vs my old 100mbps DVCPROHD

Still, it will be pretty interesting to see how that all turns out. I always wanted a HMC, but for 3k or whatever it is, I can get a fully loaded DSLR setup, so I never really had any interest in it.

there are some out there coming out, there is a new sony cam thats 422 50mbps but its only 720p60 and is like 5 grand.

What would you say to get for lights, I just got three 500w westcott pb500s because they were on super sale (45$) on b&h, But I am interested in getting some more industrial outdoor lights, Ive been looking at lowell omni lights. But am wondering if anyone has anything better
