'telling people you are there' and 'poached' arn't really the same thing. there's a reason why riders work with a video company, its so they can put together the best video segement possible. 'being there' at big events and photoshoots doesn't really amount to shit for a movie part. if you walk up to a rider and ask them 'hey can i take some shots of you for a movie i'm making?' (which you have proven that you've done time and time again, and theres no need to really get into it) do you really expect someone to say no to that?
BAD STUFF:
i think a lot of the big name sections in Hibachi King made the riders look a lot worse than they really are through a combination of clips that don't belong in a movie (for riders at that level anyways) and a combination of bad shots and edits.
if you want to see Corey Vanular, Travis Redd, Craig Coker, or Peter Olenick go get High 5 where you'll see the same shit from the big photo shoots with way better shots and editing, and in High 5 the stuff from the public shoots/events only makes up tiny portions of the riders sections, instead of the majority of it as in Hibachi King.
same goes for Hibbert, whose 'dramatic return' to video in Hibachi King is comprised entirely of shots from Freeskier Jibfest(s) and other events, as well as shots of sketched landings and other questionalble clips that don't belong in a movie (atleast if you're actually trying to promote the riders). The random clips that Hibbert has scattered around throughout Forward are much better than anything in his section in HK.
GOOD STUFF:
big names aside, the '80%' locals were what I was really looking forward to in this movie. the Curry / Wiechecki / Gillern section was def. the highlight of the locals, featuring a lot of urban shots and a ton of non-event footage it was obvious that these were 'real' sections in the movie, except for the fact that they were all bunched together in one song and the whole thing is available for download (no different than the movie version) from the H30 website.
if there's any solid reason for buying Hibachi King, its for the girls. i was stoked to see the up and coming female riders ripping it up. i really would have liked to see full sections of Amanda Cola, Iris Dougherty, etc since they shot with H30 so much this year. but even though all the girls got grouped into one section it still made me feel like i didn't totally waste my money (yeah i actually bought it).
OTHER STUFF:
-the intro is made up entirely of shots that appear later in the movie (even cutaways are repeated)
-just at first glance i noticed 3 riders names mis-spelled, something that you think would have been caught / corrected if the riders have actaully seen their sections. one name was spelled wrong that was in the movie last year and spelled wrong a completely different way this time!
thats all i'm gonna say about shooting / editing since i'm making a movie of my own i dont really want to get into it because i have my own personal preferences as far as that goes, but i would easily agree with everything that freeski124 said above.
i havn't seen Super yet, but just by looking at the list of riders and knowing that Francis Wolf / YSP have been working with them outside of big events and competitions would make me think that Super will be a lot better, and a lot less poached than Hibachi King.
