For the simple reason that it's a multi impact helmet, not a one and done like most others. It's also usable for summer and winter activities as the winter liner and ear pieces are removable.
How about you go and try some on? You wont know what fits best until you do. Then go buy them online if you don't want to purchase from your local shop...which I recommend since it only helps out your community.
Spend the extra $ and buy a multi-impact helmet. I like POC, recently bought by Black Diamond. They cost about x2 as much but will last forever. The top end helmets have a kevlar wrap to prevent anything from splitting your head open.
skate helmets arent made for freazing cold temperature, and are a lot less safer when used on snow because of it, the foam hardens and will crack much easier, so you probably shouldnt do this.
