What is this filter/ lens attachment

It's an image from a 35mm adapter. You normally zoom into the frame so it takes up the entire video, but you can zoom out and you get that effect. You could definitely create a matte that could mimic it though.

oops, you can also get close to creating this image by keeping your lens wide open and therefore decreasing your depth of field. you will probably need a neutral density filter, or you can jack your shutter up but it won't look very natural

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the wiki article and I'm still kind of confused, does this 35mm adapter fit on the front of the lens, and is it only for video cameras, or could I hypothetically get one for my DSLR if I wanted to emulate that effect?

Well first, you don't wanna buy a machine that costs 500 bucks just for one effect that you could mimic in post. All you have to do is create an overlay that looks the same (or find one online, probably exisits) put that on top of your shot and then frame it how you want and then if you shoot with your dslr at 2.8 or lower you could get some nice shallow dof to create the effect.

35mm adapters are made for cameras that don't have large sensors and interchangeable lenses. People buy them (like I did) for the filmatic look, the ability to use interchangeable lenses and get a shallow dof. With the introduction of the HDDSLR, 35mm adapters are dying. They used to sell for like 2k for a brand new setup, i bought mine for 1k and then sold it for like 600 after a year. Please, do not buy one. You can make the effect you want with some very simple post work.
