I have a friend who went to U of U and transferred to western washington up in bellingham. Im from seattle and from what he said one of the biggest differences is the mormon influence in SLC is huge and Seattle has pretty much no religious influence... not trying to say one is better than the other but just different and something to consider.
but if you're coming from Sand Point you're going to like the skiing on the west side a hell of a lot more than Schweitzer and the other ID mountains....
SLC = ...large town... but with the best skiing access from any metro area in NA.
If skiing is the only thing that matters, SLC is the easy choice. If you want to live in a real city and have everything that comes with that, Seattle is going to offer a lot more than SLC.
I don't know, I'm still pretty undecided. WU in seattle is a better school, but I don't really know what I want to do yet so skiing a lot would be cool. And I like Seattle but wonder if the weather will get me feeling down.
Seattle is not really a big city, but a bunch of smaller neighborhoods and communities that got grouped together by arbitrary boundaries. Each area has its own smaller culture and scene. Its kinda like Afghanistan, but with aged liberal hippies, yuppie liberal hipsters, and roads that don't blow up when you drive on them. There are lots of hipster douche-bags here. If you can handle them, and the total lack of sunshine, it is not a bad place to be. And traffic sucks. Coffee is great (except for Starbucks, and that Portlandic swill known as Stumptown (which is secretly really good)).
Seattle, and the University of Washington, are significantly more expensive than UofU and SLUT (we do have our own SLUT here too now!). Skiing will be even more expensive out of Seattle. While the season pass might be cheaper, getting there will not be. You are an hour to two hours away from the mountain at Seattle, and we have some of the most expensive gas in the country (said liberals tax the shit out of it). Depending on your vehicle you can spend an excess of $40 a day on gas ($4.25/gal is somewhat standard here). The drivers are also retarded.
I have no idea about UofU, but there is a lack of hot girls on the UW campus (by college standards), and even less warm sunny weather to convince them to take their cloths off on campus (that will be up to you and alcohol, the Sororstitues here do get neked in exchange for alcohol, but that is probably true at UofU too).
The weather is a real issue for many out of state students here (UW). You may not see the sun for three or more months at a time. Most people wright this off, but it can affect you. That said, 20 F is a cold winter day here, and 85 F is a hot summer day, so we do have a very mild climate. Western WA is one of the few places in the world where Nature does not make a constant and active attempt to kill you (Just the dumb Asian drivers).
All that aside:
If skiing is your primary motivation, go to Utah, but don't waste your money on School. You can get drunk and ski for a lot less than instate at either place.
If you want an experience, Seattle. You can always live in SLC; It's a great city to raise a family, it's a livable place, it's got a great job market, etc. Living in Seattle is something you may not be able to do later on in life so go for it while you can.
Go for it man! It's gonna cost more but it's a world class city with something ALWAYS going on. Great music (you gotta go to the Gorge), way better young person town, pro sports, etc. I went out of state for school to get an experience and I'm enjoying EVERY second of it and I know I would have hated staying home and going to CC or Fresno State. Go to Seattle!
Do you like rain or do you like sun?
Do you like Asians or do you like Mormons?
Do you like to drive a long way to ski or do you want to be close to the mountain?
I got into UW too but like WSU more. I'm just saying he should pick the placed based on the experience he can get. Pullman is a great place as I'm having a great time.
Well however you want to put it, im referring to the "Green" Movement. Salt Lake is a city with limited resources so it is required to focus on sustainability.
Hmmm, not hating. That's just my area of interest and Sustainability jobs don't seem to exist in the state of Utah. Colorado, California, Washington, Oregon, etc on the other hand....
Utah seems more like Wyoming in their sustainability efforts. Either way this post has nothing to do with this thread and I apologize for derailing it.
I thought I would just add that, in Seattle, you ski in cement on a pow day (well not always, but often), in SLC you ski the actually fluffy stuff...also I have skied more days in the PNW rain than I care to count.
If you do end up in Seattle, do yourself a favor and stay there for the summer (at the very least august)...it nearly makes the rest of the year worth it.
U of U is way closer to skiing, but Seattle is generally a bit cooler than SLC (both sick towns). I go to the U and i like it a lot, tons of skiers, tons of skiing events and generally good vibes from everyone. I dont know too much about seattle i do have a friend going to UW who says trying to ski can be inconvenient there with how far the resorts are away and lack of public transportation. Honestly there both really dope locations and your going to ski a lot at sick mountains either way so i might just pick the school you like more
I go to seattle U. its badass as hell. i'm right donwtown and the city is the best in the nw. Friends at the U also love it though... you can't go wrong. But the 206 is full of opportunity. think about it
