check out trek they have some sick bikes and there awesome quality. The bad thing though is that you really should spend less than a $1000 on a bike because anything lower is really just made to look like a mtn bike and will brake the second you take it over anything. I dont know much about other companies only because i work for a bike shop that sells trek. But if i had to choose definatley get a 29er and dont go cheap.

dont buy trek, their shitty generic bikes that usualy come with crappy components, its better to start hardtail because it will keep your costs down and get you a better bike. are you planning on going over jumps a lot? then you should probably consider a dirtjumper, but if your just planning on riding trails or a lil of both you should get a xc bike. dont cheap out on the bike but you shouldnt have to spend much over 1000 for what your looking for, your pricerange is gonna be 800 to 1200. even better but i would only reccomend it if you have a friend who knows a lot about biking is to buy off craigs list because you can get a much much better bike for your money, just because its used doesn't mean its bad you could get a 2000$ bike for 1200. i alwyase try and support smaller companys which is good but that will drive your price up, my favorites are moots and yeti, you could probably find a old yeti hardtale that runs perfectly fine for 1200 and it would have top of the line components and you would be way happier on it than a 1200$ terk from your bike store, not only will you feel more comfortable the bike would last twice as long as the new one you got at the bike shop.

Aaron Gwin? Cam McCaul? Brandon Semenuk? Trek definitely doesn't make shitty generic bikes with crappy components. At the least, their high end bikes are amazing, like the session and remedy groups.


OP: The pinkbike buy/sell or craigslist are great places to start, but make sure you have a friend who is well educated in bike maintenance come with you to inspect the bike in case there is a problem like a frame crack.

a rigid 29er may be the best way to go, there are a few companies that make them relatively inexpensively (under $400) and there are pretty solid and simple bikes that can do it all

moots are a good company that make quality frames but they are way over priced, same with yeti they are over priced and have poor suspension supports. but def go with a hard tail, getting dual suspension just makes you have to worry about your bike more. more parts to the bike, more parts that will break.

true that moots is the best, i don't care if i have to spend a little more, i will love the bike to death and it will last forever as for trek, just because bignames ride it dosent mean they make a good bike. also most of the trek bikes in his price range are not gonna be good bikes, i understand they make some good bikes. i would buy a used yeti hardtail yeti makes great bikes, its easy to wanna go softtail but i have owned several and i like hardtail much much better, def go hardtail if your some what new

One of the best companies for customer service in my opinion is Transition. They make amazing bikes, but then again you can't beat something along the lines of a santa-cruz, or devinci. You really didn't give enough about your riding style, where you ride, or what you ride to recommend anything.

Not intending to thread jack here but I'm in a similar situation...

Looking for an xc/all terrain and I've been looking at the Specilized Stumpjumper. Managed to find what it seems to be a decent deal on pinkbike: http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1168769/

Kind of wanna check one out in person before I just buy it online with out checking it out... Any advice here?

compared to other companies' low end bikes trek has by far the best components, durability, and value. i sold and built trek bikes all summer and they do an extremely good job packing their $800 bikes with as much as they can offer. of course a cheaper bike won't be awesome and won't have a full XX build kit but it's all about how much money you can spend, and most steps of the way trek will be the highest quality of its class. bontrager makes perfectly decent stock components, and most low end trek mountain bikes come with hayes hydraulic brakes or avid bb5's. the only lacking area are the forks which are usually suuntor coil forks with shitty lockouts, but all other companies in that range are using the same ones

then you go up the line into the 100 series and they make some damn nice bikes. also not to mention the superfly which, aside from the front derailleur mount issues, is a super nice bike that weighs nothing

if you want to build it yourself from an underground company, go for it, but it's gonna cost you more than $1000
