Dslr footage into fcp?

hey ns,

just curious as to how you guys import your (canon) DSLR footage into final cut. I did some research and found the canon plug in for fcp but just wondering if its a good method to import. If not any method you would suggest?

most people transcode to prores using mpeg streamclip or similar

Well, you can simply click and drag off your camera to your computer then to fcp, but i don't suggestion editing in the canon h264 codec. You can log and transfer all of your files through fcp and set them to be encoded to prores 422 LT or you can batch list with mpeg steamclip and export to prores 422 LT from there too.

what i do is just take the sd card out and trim the shots put those in a final and save to my desktop. then just go into final cut and import the files from the folder

Its slower. with newer computers, its easier, but its just a shitty codec. h264 is mean to upload online, prores is meant to edit.

I drag and drop my files with a card reader to my computer and use mpeg streamclip to convert my files to pro res 422.
On a side note does anyone know why I only get the opportunity to convert to pro res 422 and pro res 422 HQ (both have the same name so I am always unsure about witch one I use when converting) on my mac book? When I use it on my dads iMac I get all the opportunities like proxy, LT, HQ, and 4444.

Ypu can copy paste into a folder and impprt the folder.
I recommend using a program called Compressor (it comes with the final cut suite), and import through it into a folder and then import the folder to fcp. Just google how it works (its not really complicated) and some settings for your camera, the quality will be much better after this procedure.
