Skiing/College car

I'm in the process of looking for a first car to buy. Hopefully, I'll get one before winter. Which car would you suggest that's best for skiing and college that is reasonably affordable?

or any subaru wagon. plenty of room for people to ride with you or skis inside if you don't have racks. lay the seats down if you need to sleep in.

but seriously, vans and minivans are the shit if you also want to do roadtrips and go skiing with it!
sure you can also sleep in a station wagon type car but you'll never get the comfort of a van, especially if you deck it out for a couple hunderd bucks ...

drove many cars since high school.....currently going into senior year of college and i drove a can throughout high school, by far the best car iv had. Enormous space for anything and people, tv's in the back, it was a fully loaded honda oddesy. ACtually pretty decent acceleration.

Anyways heres the list of cars iv had over the years

2005 accord
2006 oddesy
2008 civic
2007 lexus gs 350 awd
2003 jetta ( current)

inherited my dads lexus when he passed and sold it along with other cars for money becuase driving a nice car is so over rated even though it is nice, such a dumb thing to own young.

Van was so awsome i miss it so much.

Anyways, look into smaller/ midsize suv gass will kill you on big ones, wagon, larger sedans....basically anything with decent mpg and can get you from ponit a to b with no problems. Who cares what other people think of your car. Also who gives a shit how many people you can take witn you, i personally don't like driving all kinds ofpoeple around, they can drive themselves. Not packing 8 people into one car

This. My buddy lays down in the seats to lay women all the time (Horrible pun, I know). But yeah, we call it the shagin' wagon and its awesome. 200k miles on it right now and has had very few problems. Shreds through snow and fits all your buddies and skis, what more could you ask for?

If you cant find/afford/whatever your reason is one, VW arent bad cars, same with a AWD Ford or Toyota.

I seriously think I just found the perfect used ski car.

SUZUKI SX4.

It sounds odd, and believe me, I was mixed when I first saw this. I sort of wish I would have bought this for my next vehicle... but that is a different story.

High points:

-TONNES of room - fold down seats for carrying, and 4 passengers plus a nice trunk when you need it
-FWD, AWD AND 4WD. That is the craziest most awesome mix of drives that you've ever heard. TRUST me, proper 4WD is fucking insane. THe worst storm in the universe mixed with the shittiest ice of all time with REAL 4WD will be your absolute bitch. You get the gas efficiency of FWD, and the choice of AWD or 4WD dependant on how fucked up things are.
-Reliability. I've done DEEP research, and the Suzuki cars get extremely high reliability models, especially used. I've got an account at consumer reports, and have matched this with deep website/blog research - the SX4 - even the 2007 one - is reliable as all hell get out.

Give it a chance. its cheaper to fix, cheaper to buy, has the gas efficiency of FWD most of the time, and more space than basically anything else out there.

You have NO FUCKING IDEA how amazing of a snow car that was. My first whip ever was a 1985 Toyota Tercel, and that bitch had both FWD and 4WD - with a gearing that was called 'extra low'.

That fucking car could get out of ANYTHING. I shit you not - I could drive through snow that I couldn't walk in. If that thing hadn't rusted through to the core, I'd still be driving it today.

THe SX4 as I can tell though, is the closest vehicle to the 85/86 tercel that I've ever found.

if you're not in too hardcore snow then get a used jetta tdi. they get 50 mpg, cost nothing, and the FWD does extremely well in the snow if you get snow tires. i live in vermont on a massive hill that ices over in the winter and i drive my jetta all over, there're probably 5 days a year when i have to take the truck with studded snow tires instead of the jetta, all other days it kills it

it was used in great condition for like 10 grand and it's been going strong for the better part of 5 years

dont let the fact that its not awd/4wd fool you. I drove in the thick of new england winter on many occasions and think I got stuck once - when I was dicking around with the ebrake/drifting.

I got my 96 VW Golf on Craigslist.  My bro goes to school for Automotive and works at a dealership so I don't have to pay to take it to a mechanic.  It's nice to not pay for my car to be fixed.

Newer model Subarus with the AWD systems actually do suck. My family's 05 Forester has had problem after problem with various drive train components. But our 80-something Loyale, that car was beastly. Had as much clearance as our Forester, with better mileage and on demand 4. Seriously though, the clearance on those cars is ridiculous for their size. They look practically lifted.
