Best knives for self defense

Now before reading this, I'm not a gungho douchebag who goes flipping out his pocketknife at any distant threat, and I don't instigate fights, etc., etc. Short story time: family when to Atlanta when I was 10, almost got mugged in metro station. Family is going to chicago next summer and I don't want to be caught with my hands in my pants, because for those who don't know chicago is one violent-ass city.
I was thinking of a balisong (butterfly) or automatic (switchblade) knife, because getting through airport security won't be a problem because we'd be driving (D.C. -> Chi).

Which do you guys recommend? +k

just get a good regular pocket knife about 4 inch that has a little knobby thingy by the base of the blade and get good at using your thumb to flick it open. just like a switch but legal

Odds are you'll hurt yourself more by bringing out a knife. And what the hell type of mugger goes after a full family on vacation? I'll answer...a stupid one. What's a stupid mugger more likely to do? Something stupid...like stabbing some kid who thought he was gonna be a hero.


But yea, I've heard that all those tourist sites are just a violence-haven, full of nothing but muggers, rapists, and murderers. So bring a sword and steed because you're gonna be crawling through piles of bodies by noon.

Well I don't know the rules in Illinois for carting a knife, and not sure how much you want to spend. I like my Spyderco Paramilitary 2 as an all around carry/self defense option

Get a push dagger. I have collect knives for shuts and gigs. For real though if it's for strictly self defense you want a weapon for jabbing/thrusting not slashing like 95% of knives are designed for. Check em out you can pick em up cheap. Also butterfly knives are 90% show 10% effective. Unless you're quite skilled with one it is pointless.

just pulling this one out will most likely repel any attackers ...

however if you're looking for something a little easier to cover, a ww2 trenchknife is the shit ! i myself have an old M3 i bought in normandy and it's pretty badass!(very similar to the one listed by PJS. but in a metal scabbard) there's also a ww1/ww2 version with brass knuckles to give you better grip and to deliver devastating punches ...

personally if i had the room to carry a fixed blad for self defense i'd pick it over a folding or ejecting blade everyday....



also just a headsup if you need to ask NS about blade recommendations i don't think it's wise to bring a knife for self defense, you're better off to get robbed than to potentially get stabbed by your own knife or get shot when one of those hoodlums pulls a 9mm on you ... if you really want something for self defense get pepperspray or a tazer or something, atleast nothing that can seriously fuck up your own shit ....
