Macbook Pro vs Ultrabook

apologies if this is a repost, i searchbared and didn't find exactly what i was looking for. so here goes:

i have a friend who is going to america in a few days time (i'm from the UK) and i was considering giving him the cash to purchase me a macbook pro while he's over there. money is a bit of a constraint, so i'm only looking at buying the 13" model. doing this would give me a saving of £200 (due to exchange rates etc.)

my other option is to buy an ultrabook. i have been looking at ACER and ASUS models which have pretty similar specs to the macbook and are more within my price range (£600-£700).

the only other information i feel is relevant is that i have never owned an apple computer, where as i have owned plenty of laptops and PCs in my time and quite frankly i am getting fucking sick of windows. problem is the macbook is the more expensive option, and i am basically trying to decide if it is worth an extra £100-£200 than an ultrabook with similar specs.

i would be using whichever one i buy for general university work, video editing, photoshopping, web design, and music making.

so NS what is your advice?

my advice is if your going with a mac skip the 13" Pro and either get a 15" if your doing serious video work or get the 13" Air instead of Pro if its not that serious work, the 13" pro sucks

for PC ultrabooks I can't really help

I seriously disagree. The 15 is definitely a bit faster but if your in school the 15 is much more of a hastle to carry around

then get an Air or a 15" retina, for what it is the 13" pro makes no sense

it really is matter of opinion but...

13 inch mbp
Processor: 2.9 GHZ
Memory 8gb
Hardrive 256 GB
$1899
easily upgradeable


13 inch air
Processor 2.0 GHZ
Memory 8gb
Hardrive 256 GB
FAR more portable
$1699
not as easily upgradeable


BUT if you are thinking about doing extensive video editing get the 15 inch with graphics card.

probably should have been more clear on this. i'm not going to be doing extensive video editing as such, just sort of dabbling in it if that makes sense?

My post was trying to convey the message that since the 13 inch models were basically equal in power why not go with the 13 inch model that is more portable.

mehh if im spending that kinda money im just gona get a 15 inch. if youre doing any sorta serious video/photo editing then id rather have a macpro 15 or 17.

I woulda killed to get the retina but $1200 was the absolute max i could push my budget. Took me about a year to save for that. I dont have a job so it took awhile

i have a 15inch and i put 8 gigs of ram and the thing is fast.. end of story I love it.

Air vs MBP is a non debate unless you're getting the 11" air, which is too friggin' small. I love the 13" size. Perfect blend between portability and screen size.
The only thing I like about the 15" is that it has a GUI, which would come in handy when using an external monitor. But that's about it I think...
