Wide Primes/short telephoto EF lenses with fixed filter rings?
I've been looking for a lens that will fit a CPL without rotating when it focusses, I'm looking for something that's less than 35mm, the 50mm 1.8 is great, but it's just a bit too narrow, at least aperture 6, I'm not too fussed about that as it'll be pretty much exclusively used for skiing, although a larger arpeture would be a lot more preferred, I'm just struggling to find anything suitable, I'm thinking about getting the tamron 17-50 but at around $300 I've just been looking for alternatives. sorry if It's a stupid thread.
nah, $300 is still pretty cheap, and you'll actually get good images out of it. most zooms that are less than 300, aren't going to be great and will definitely not be f/2.8. (unless they're old)
there is some lenses like the sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 that will be better than the kit lens, but still not as good as the tamron. i think it's like $200 or something. i'm guessing you have a t2i or similar, you should be prepared to spend a hell of a lot more on lenses than on the body.
The tamron would be the best for you cause it covers such a useful range. You could get like a 28mm 2.8 or something but I think it's around the same price as the tamron and far less useful.
The Sigma is a piece of shit. I'd rather shoot with the kitlens. I don't know why the kitlens gets so much hate on here, but it's a very capable lens and for the money (like 60$?) there's nothing as good out there (bang for the buck).
Check out Gavin Rudy's stuff on here. He the guy who made the star panorama tutorial GREAT stuff from that 'crappy lens'.
OT:
Get a 28mm prime. Plenty of good ones out there.
If you want the speed, check out the Sigma Superwide II. Great lens that fits your needs well.
True about the focus ring, but optically it blows.
If you're shooting video, you're much better off with old primes. There's like a gazillion good 28mm primes out there. No rotating element, f/2.8, metal build, long focus throw, smooth focus. And all that for less than 50$.
