Data management for big project

I just shot a wedding video and now im at the editing stage, problem is my computer is out of space and i need to transfer about 300 gigs of footage for this project. Im no noob at weddings, im not looking at tips on this, i need help with data management strategies.

My plan is to back up my computer on a hard drive and then delete tonnes of things from my computer so i have space to transfer footage. When im done my project i would restore my backup and have things back to normal.

I want to know if this is the best aproch for big projects like this and even if its safe.

If it is, is there a way to delete everything except programs in a safe and efficiant way?

I'd buy a 1tb firewire 800 hard drive. Deleting stuff is never a good solution, ever.

firewire is pretty fast. it might not be as fast as your internal drive but it's pretty good

Can someone with experience give me a more convincing answer than how firewire is "pretty fast"

Were talking about 40 hours of editing minimum. Maybee firewire is the best solution i just need to know it wont slow me down or cause bugs

Firewire 800 will work great. I've been using firewire 800 for years, it's fast and works well.

There are a lot of variables to consider. It's possible that firewire might not work at all.

First off, what platform is your system? What format are you editing in (Prores 422 (HQ), AVCHD, Canon H.264, RED raw, DPX, etc)? Do you want to edit this wedding video off an external hard drive, or are you planning to use the external to hold non-essential material from other projects and keep the wedding video media locally? Do you want to have RAID redundancy for safety?

Im editing on an imac, shooting 7D converted to prores422lt. Im looking for the most efficiant way to edit 250 gigs of video on fcp7. My hard drive is compatible with fire wire but only has a usb3 port, I need to buy an adapter or a special cable.

the hard drive is used only for video and has only this contract on it so Im thinking now about holding the whole project on the drive. not sure what raid redundancy is but Im planning on having a back up copy of the footage on an other hard drive

So whith this information, what is my best aproach?

Prores 422 LT's data rate at 23.976fps is 82 Mb/s, which will stream fine over Firewire 800. Firewire 800 has a theoretical limit of 800 Mb/s, but even if you only get a much more likely 600ish Mb/s, it's still enough to pull 7 streams of video over the connection (for instance, if you had 7 tracks of stacked video with transparencies). I wouldn't recommend any sort of USB 3 to FW 800 adapter, as I haven't had much success with any kind of USB 3 adapters to any type of connection.

If you have your media backed up don't worry about spending money on a RAID. I'd grab something like this: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-FireWire800-External-301542U-Aluminum/dp/B0050SI9L4/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
