School me on AMD vs Intel processors

So Im looking for a new PC to replace my MBP and Im thoroughly confused by all the options available nowadays. Will be used mainly for simple tasks and some light gaming, MW2/BF2. The new AMD quad cores seem to be getting the best reviews by the techies for gaming, but the i7s, even a high end i5 sound like they would work too. School me please!

I put together a gaming computer 2 years back and i had trouble deciding between an AMD quad core and an intel i5 quad core. i decided to save a little money and went with amd phenom II and shes still holding up strong.

Both companies produce high end hardware. I would combine AMD processors with AMD Radeon graphic chips and Intel processors with Geforce (NVIDIA) chips. In the end, modern high end processors combined with 64bit software will have more perfomance then any game needs right now (few years ago no game could even use more than dualcor), no matter whether its AMD or Intel. The chips are actually better then the inefficent software. (Don't forget a silent cooling system and RAM).

There are defenitely better places to discuss such a matter than NS dude. ;)

Just got a Samsung series 5 with quad core i7 a decent nvidia graphics card and about 8gb ram for like $800 I'm loving it so far it's deffintley worth checking into

i hate AMD with a passion, but thats just me. Some people like them, I just love intel. Way more reliable from what i've heard, and while more expensive, they provide a superior product.

In my opinion Intel>AMD for processors, but I think of them as equals for graphics cards(Nvida=AMD).

A comp is an investment, I want something that I dont have to have to upgrade later. I will do photoshop and illustrator too.

An i5 or i7 will last a good while for everything else you want to do, besides gaming. As far as gaming goes, I don't know for sure, so I google'd and it seems that most people are saying the i5 (2500k) last 3-4 years before needing to upgrade for gaming needs. You should ask yourself if you still see yourself playing games in 3-4 years, if you don't, I don't see why you would want to get an i7. Also, I didn't look into how long an i7 will last for gaming, but you could probably find it somewhere.

If you're planning to OC at all, go for an amd chip. I'd actually recommend AMD for building your own rig, they're much cheaper and no less reliable, if anything they're better.

Im not building a comp, just getting a laptop. I found a nice i7 samsung I may pull the trigger on. 8gb, Intel Core i7-2630QM which is getting great reviews on tomshardware, 1080p, Nvidia 525 graphics card with 1gb dedicated to it.

AMD is cheaper and faster. I can get a 3.4 ghz chip for significantly less than intel. The only good thing about intel is that it lasts long. But long is so long that by the time it die it would be obsolete.

ehh...i've had pc's with intel and amd processors....used raedon gfx card with the amd and nivida with the intel....they each performed great, and the only difference was what do you want your sticker to say on your unit, "Intel" or "AMD"

FTR, I have a 15'' MBP right now, its actually for sale if ya want to buy it.

I have a 360 with all the COD/BF games, but Ive always enjoyed comps better. They are the way to play games online.

To the dude talking about a 3.6ghz chip in a laptop, please show me this beast of a machine..and dont show me numbers that are overclocked.

This company always sells beast machines so if you're looking just check what they have installed and if you dont care about what your machine looks like just replicate it in an inexpensive case and what not.  I personally want to buy one of the alienware computers because I love the bad ass style of cases they use or buy an empty case and build my own one day.

Intel has faster processors-for a price. A processor that gets 3.4 ghz by amd is $150. That's better than dropping $150 for a say 2.8 ghz processor by intel. They jack the price up cause they last longer but the life is honestly irrelevant because by the time the processor from intel dies, it would have been obsolete for years. Also AMD made the fastest processor in the world. Look it up.

All you're doing is comparing the clock rate. You do realise, especially when comparing AMD and Intel, the clock rate doesn't really mean anything?

It's all about the architecture, Instructions per cycle, instructions per second etc etc.

An Intel CPU clocked at 2.8Ghz is still significantly faster than an AMD CPU clocked at 3.4Ghz.

That makes no sense. It's like saying 35 mph in a mercedes is faster than 45 mph in a toyota... They're the same unit, how can one be more than the other even if the first is faster than the latter. (I hope that makes sense.)
fyi im still really new to computers so im looking to learn not start a shitstorm.

There's far more to determining the speed of a processor than just it's clock rate.

if you want to know about the speed, it's about the Instructions Per Second.

Here's a calculation to work out the Instructions Per Second ..... The figures that I use are from the Dhrystone Benchmark.

MIPS = Million Instructions Per Second.

Intel i7 2600k quad core at 3.4Ghz has 128 300 MIPS
AMD Phenom II X6 six core at 3.3Ghz has 78 440 MIPS

You then divide the MIPS by the clock rate.

128 300 / 3400 = 37.7
78 440 / 3300 = 23.7

You then divide that figure by Cores Per Die

37.7 / 4 = 9.43
23.7 / 6 = 3.9

The intel processor can process 9.43 Instructions Per Second while the AMD one can only process 3.9 Instructions Per Second.

Their clock rate was only different by 100Hz, so it shows that clock rate doesn't really mean that much.
