Snow Camping - Tips

Hey,

Im going to go camping on the snow for 5 days tonight, and I want to know any tips you guys might have for this adventure. Where to camp and all those kinds of things help.

Take some dope pictures, make sure you can still rock out to your fav music, and then post the pictures on the internet. Those are all good tips.

I bring one that's only rated to about 40 F. Then when I start to get hypothermic my friends have to get naked an cuddle with me all night to keep me from dying. I really like playing the role of the sad cold victim. The old damsel in distress routine I guess. Nothing like a few good friends to help get you through those long cold nights. I miss winter camping. I haven't been in a while because my friends got a little tired of me trying to reuse the same game plan.Hopefully this winter I can get some new friends that want to go camping with me.


How many people in your group op? Room for one more?

Make sure you have a winter sleeping pad, or your ass is LITERALY going to freeze on the ground. Also a 4 season tent and sleeping bag are gonna be key.

If you make an igloo or snow cave, be sure to dig a cold ditch.

My sleeping bag is rated -1 comfort and -6 extreme, in celsius.
Im going solo, but if anybody wants to join, just let me know, Im going to Antillanca, Chile =D.

I just got back, and well the weather sucked, I got rain the 3 days that I spent there, and I couldnt climb/ski the volcano I wanted because of the fog too. Me and my tent enjoyed winds of 70 km/h the first night and I got to sleep in a crater of a volcano, that was pretty sick!

Thanks for the help and the good wishes. My sleeping bag ended up to be 6 comfort and -1 extreme (celsius) but I didnt get cold at all, but I slept with fleece pants and my puffy jacket!

3 things to consider when winter camping

           1. Have at least 2 inches(or 5cm) of padding under you when sleeping on ground. I prefer foam over air in winter cause air can leak out if it gets really cold.

            2. Piss bottle. I'm serious. I dont practice this method cause I fine with waking up, throwing on my boots and jacket, then finding a tree in the dead of the night. Some people wont get out of their sleeping bags till morning so they get a empty bottle with a good lid and piss in it while in their sleeping bags. Warning: This method only really works for men. Sorry women. 

           3. Every night before I go to bed I boil some water. Then I pour it into my nalgeen and put it in my sleeping bag about 20mins before I go to sleep. Nothing is better on a cold night then a pre-warmed sleeping bag.  Be careful cause some cheap water bottles will leak from the lid do to temperature exchange.

Soo, the first day I basically slept all day, the second day I woke up just to go cook some stuff at the resorts place that was near-by. The rest of the time I just spent it inside my tent thinking about stuff that I had to think about (recent changes in my life hahaha), but I should have brought a book!

Bring a snow shovel and snow shoes. Depending on the depth (you're going this winter, right?).

Bring a negative-rated bag, and bring a pad. Don't bring a pad that inflates with air, that will make you colder, because the ground cools the air, making you colder. Obviously, bring a 4 season tent, and one of those things in the top of the tent so you can cook inside of it. This is only if it's really fucking cold though

dress appropiately and google some shit
