I lost my roommate today...

I had a really good friend of mine that i hadnt seen in a while stay with me since i've started to live alone. he stayed for 3 months and we had the funnest time, mad house parties, crazy screwing around, he helped through the hard times, i mean we did everything together. It was just great to always have someone there to chilll with.

I just dropped him off at the airport this morning and i'm not gonna see him since he's going to college way far away now. And idk, i'm just feelin bummed right now. Everything is way more boring, i got all mushy when i turned the PS3 on and it said reconnect Controller 2. I mean i guess i just miss my bro, no homo.

Now i dont know if any of you have ever had a great roommate, like your best friend, and then suddenly say bye to them, its hard.

Life is full of old friends leaving and meeting new friends. If you stayed friends with everyone for ever it would get stale, not to mention you'd have too many people to keep up with. During your life, things change, you change. I'm not saying you won't miss people, because you def will, but that's just how it is.


Just keep making new friends. Lots of cool people out there.

not to be rude or anything but that's probably the end of your tightknit friendship... I went through a similar thing.  He got super buys and met new people and I got super busy and met new people... We still talk once in a blue moon but it's not anything like it was nor will it ever will be. People change, especiallly at the age you're currently at.

It sounds nice and all but realistically, friends will go in and out of your life. Unless you stay in the town you went to high school in forever, most of your friends from that time will not be close friends in a few years. I'm not saying you won't be cool with them if you see them, they just won't really be a part of your life anymore.

You really can't stay in touch with everyone. It's impossible. Especially for a good chunk of your friends. The only reason you were friends with most of the people in high school was that you were trapped inside a big box with them for 6-7 hours a day. Once you get out of there, everyone goes there separate ways.

There are positives though. The more you pursue your own dreams, the tighter some of friendships will become. Yeah you had some tight friendships in high school but whatever. Most people head out in entirely different directions. If you head of and do the shit you want to, you'll find more people that you have much more in common with. Like when you spend time in the park skiing, you acquire a lot of friends with that as a major common interest.

There will always be friends you miss, that occasional nostalgia regarding a person of your past, but it's just life. For every person that exits your current life, there will be plenty of new people to meet, new friendships to develop.

Life keeps things fresh, and I dig that.

I'm with you.

Treasure friendships, learn from them, grow from them, but most relationships, of any kind, have a shelf life, and there's nothing wrong with drifting apart or gravitating towards new people. Frankly, as you grow older, the importance you place on friendship changes, and you come to value different things in people.

 As a kid, you can be friends with pretty much anyone that you're interacting with regularly. As you age, your time becomes more precious and valuable, and we become, simultaneously, more accepting of others but also more discerning and critical of whom we choose to spend time with. Some people cling to friendships and relationships long after they've become unfulfilling for fear of loneliness, where taking a step back (or forward in the other direction) can be the better thing. I have a lot of friends and friends that "were", so to speak, but my close knit circle has changed and is constantly changing and it's perfectly natural.

Doesn't mean that you can't "grieve" a friendship like OP is doing, I certainly have, but focus on the positive and the times shared and take comfort in the fact that you each impacted each other's lives in a positive way and take that with you into the next friendship.

I like this. Whatever direction your going to go, you will always find new people to hang with. but i know people who have had a great friend move away, but 10 years down the road they can still call up that same dude and can see whats up with them and whats new in their life. that's more what i meant by they don't drop off the face of the earth type of thing.

Staying connected takes effort but is sweet if ya make it happen. And if ya grow apart then like _____ said, there is plenty more people doin the same shit you love to do that will become just as good or better friends down the road.

I hear you. I mean it's cool if you can do it and get something out of it. It just becomes harder and a lot of times just doesn't make sense.

Every person is different, and so is every relationship. Sometimes you've been through certain things with a person that leave you connected in a way that you just don't feel like you could ever get again. If that's the case go for it. Wasn't trying to discourage him from staying in touch with a friend, just trying to say it's unrealistic for people to think that you can stay friends with everyone forever. As time goes on people change, people move on to different things. 5 years from now your life will most likely be very different from today. I can understand the desire to hold onto that, and there's nothing wrong with it, just that sometimes it's best just to remember the good times and keep trucking in your own path through life.

It's cool when you run into people you haven't seen in a long time, you can nostalgia a little bit. I feel like for the most part that's as far as it needs to go though. You're both different people at that point. Sometimes you'll have people come back into the story a few chapters down the road, and work their way back into your life. That's cool. Just don't waste time trying to force it.

I just don't want to see people miss the present because their still clinging to the past. The past can be good, it's helped shape who we are, but I think it's important to move on to ensure a solid future.

My best friend's parents sent him to rehab at the beginning of the summer and for this school year they're making him go to somebullshit aftercare school in Utah. It's going to be/has been so weird without him here because usually we would be hanging out every day. It makes it even more shitty that I know he's not going to be the same person when he comes back. I mean he'll be clean, but he's definitely not gonna be the same person.

If he legitimately has a problem that's intense, I don't think this is such a bad thing. If it's parents freaking out because he smokes weed and does a little bit of k here and there then that sucks.

i had a very similar situation happen to me. i lived with my best friend in the world for about a year. kid was seriously like my brother. i moved half way across the country and now i haven't seen him in about 7 years. however, we still talk about once a month or so and he's still my best friend in the entire world. we could pick it up right where we left off.

i know the feeling though, dude. shit sucks, but that's life. new beginnings.

times like this will make you realize who your real friends are and who you really care about

after leaving highschool for college, there are only really like 2 people i constantly stay in contact with from my home town, then a group of 6 or so that i will not really contact, but hang out with on breaks and stuff.

You see there's a difference between a website and the real world where people interact with each other without the use of computer screens or webcams. You might find that hard to believe for a while but there's a life off the internet and away from your PS3.

the way i left him was funny tho, he was mad hungover and i was talking to him right before he went through security and he was like "wait 1 sec bro", walks over to the trash in this crowded airport, and just throws up like the whole bottle of gatorade i made him drink to get over his hangover. memeories for life hahah

my college roommate was a god damn saint. he was totally quiet when i was sleeping, always down for anything, and left every other weekend to see his girlfriend. now im in the navy sharing a room with mr. pent up testosterone and he stays up yelling at his video games all night. I called up my old roomie last week to tell him I miss him.

He legitimately has a problem, but they are not handling it how they should be. He has depression, and his escape from that depression was weed and painkillers, and he definitely needed help, but not this way. He was dragged out of his house at 4am one morning, no idea what was going on, and two men he didn't know drove him to a rehab center in Utah (I live in Colorado). He has been there for 11 weeks now, and from what I've heard from his parents and their visits, he is just extremely sad and wants to come home and be with his friends. We're not allowed to have any contact with him, no letters, emails, texts, calls, nothing. And just recently he found out that his parents are making him stay in Utah for the school year, which pissed him off to no end, making the whole situation even worse. I know he needed help, but he needed support from people who really care about him, not to be taken away from everything he enjoys and cares about.
