I just picked up a Canon t4i. I can see what i am shooting when i am in video mode on the lcd but when I am in any mode to take pictures the lcd screen is black. +K to anyone who can help me solve this problem

I think you just have to turn live view on, but I'd recommend looking through the eye piece when you take pictures.

^Agreed with Evan.
But to turn on live view in photo mode it should be the same button you press to begin recording video (the one with beside the viewfinder with the red dot beside it).

However, I'd recommend reading/skimming the manual front to back. It doesn't take long and it'll help you understand your camera so much better. Pretty much eliminates the technical learning curve.

But on a t3i, when taking pictures (without live view) the LCD should display the current picture settings, no?

Maybe you need to press the info button? I think the t3i does not have a proximity sensor, so you have to turn the display on and off manually before looking into the eye piece.

Oh good call. Yeah the info button manually turns on and off the settings, but if you're in live view you should still see an image even if the display is turned off.

Also, my t2i has a proximity sensor for the viewfinder, and I'm guessing from what I've seen of the t4i that Canon didn't abandon that feature.
So if those two buttons don't fix the issue maybe there's something wrong with that sensor on the camera?

As a side note, will it reduce camera shake when using a tripod & live view? is this the same concept as leaf shutter?
