Im tired of the but hurt liberals of ns trying to sound smart and not backing up there shit. Then telling me that im not open minded. Well guess what. My parents are far right wing(surprising huh?) but when they wont listen to both sides and start ranting on how obama is a terrible man, that pisses me off more than anything. As it also pisses me off when the far left wing wont listen either.

It's ridiculous how much time Republicans put towards Obama smoking weed when he was younger. First, who the hell hasnt smoked weed. Two, let's not forget Bush's coke addiction... I don't remember many republicans being up in arms about that. Three, he smoked marijuana...not that big of a deal.

Because people's beliefs, particularly religious ones, inform their decision making regarding policy? I'm not saying moderately religious people would be overtly influenced in such a way, but candidates who campaign on their religious "chops" or piety and rally their base by saying things like "we'll return our once great nation to its Christian roots!" shit is fucking terrifying. That's a pretty thick thing to say bud.

Obvious areas of religion meets policy: prayer in school, abortion, marriage, commonlaw, interacting with other nations...

all very true. i guess in an ideal world, abortion and marriage wouldn't impact who gets to run a nation. it bothers me so that (at least those two things) are criteria that people care about when choosing someone.

look over the last two pages and you'll have a decent idea as to why I don't post like I use to. I actually comment in SG quite a bit, but I avoid NSG for the most part like the fucking plague. Every year it's a new crop of dipshits trotting out the same laughable arguments with their fingers in their ears.

I agree with you to a point, in that often those issues are trumped up beyond their actual impact on people's day to day lives and are used as distractions from other more significant issues. I disagree though in principle as an individual's stance on those issues are typically correlated with their thoughts on many others. For example, if someone objects to abortion on religious grounds, I can probably safely presume to know a bit more about their other beliefs. Clearly that's not a hard fast, concrete truth, but there's a likelihood.

Also, I actually think making voting decisions based on one or two concrete policy stances (whether they seem insignificant to someone else) is about as mature and informed a decision that most voters are capable of. It's impractical, and frankly absurd, to expect the average 20 yr old (like those in this thread...often the loudest) to have a comprehensive understanding of the nuances and subtleties of politics, which is why these arguments ultimately devolve into gross generalities and chest beating. Just because you aren't gay and looking to marry your partner or because you aren't a young woman contemplating abortion, that doesn't mean that there aren't some people to whom those things matter a great deal (just using those two issues as en example, you could use any). I think it better for someone to vote on an issue or two that are personally important to them, rather than to vote from a wishy-washy, vague comprehensive "death to big government and taxes" or the opposite equivalent liberal place.

Politics are complicated. The very nature of democracy is compromise, and when considering mutually exclusive concepts (i.e. abortion is legal, or it isn't...a binary, no such thing as half-legal) there really isn't a compromise. That's true with many things, and I'd rather people vote for specifics instead of, "well, I was raised in a conservative (or liberal) household so I'll stick with the home team from here on out".

I know that's rambling and possibly barely coherent, but whatever.

As for my contribution in this thread... I might have seemed like a one way dick head that doesn't listen to shit. But Ive actually learned a lot. Thank you to the rational people who actually knew what they were talking about and backed up there statements, It wasn't alot of you but some. Ive also learned I like both Romney and Obama less than I previously did (Mostly because I have done more research) but Im still for Romney at this point. Anyway some posts in here have defiantly opened my eyes, thank you.

I think that Obama has had a less than impressive performance as president, but I will be voting for him.  On a fundamental level, even if I thought Romney would do better (which I am not convinced) I could not feel good about myself voting for someone who is as anti-gay, anti-womens' reproductive rights, anti-stem cell research etc it goes on and on. Stop moving forward and starts drfting back to the good old racist, sexist America that so many old shits cling to.

Go ahead and cockslap me with whatever figures you found on google about Obama's debt or lack of job creation or whatever I have seen them all. I just hate Mitt Romney and 99% of what he stands for

From what I understand, Romney is anti-gay marriage specifically. I don't see him being anti-gay, but his morals define marriage in the conservative sense for sure.

It does seem that this election will be a battle of money vs. morals though. I personally would like to see more freedom thrown at the moral side of that see-saw and less thrown at the ways in which we spend money. It doesn't really seem like that's an option this year though.

I guess what I'm most interested in is a leader who supports compromise and will push Congress to maintain a reasonable schedule when battling out the issues we ask them to change. I'm willing to find a middle ground on many of the important issues if it means we move forward and accept that we can't always get what we want....
