Snowcat Skiing Advice

gonna shoot to book a snowcat skiing day or two for my bday...wondering what the best bang for the buck is and if anyone has any insiders deals or friends who can hook up a fellow mate for a fee of cash, grass or 12 packs.

I haven't hit up either yet, but Irwin catskiing and the company that operates up in Steamboat are at the top of my list right now.

Up in Creede I know there is a snowcat operation that brings you too some really cool terrain that rarely gets touched. Right in the middle of the San Juans! I don't know about cost/utility though. It depends what you want to ski I suppose

I have done it in Monarch and our cat broke and we got a full refund. It was a terrible experience but I could see how it would be epic on a pow day. I have heard great things about the operation in the Crested Butte area. I don't know the name though.

I'd be careful with Irwin. The area gets pounded with snow, but ALL the terrain is on the south half of the compass. Get there during or right after a storm and it could be the deepest snow of your life, or you might end up paying $300 to ski sun thrashed snow.

Always been impressed with Blue Sky out of Steamboat.

They have a ton of terrain available up on Buff pass so you're bound to find snow. Only down side is they're super cautious and as such sometimes the terrain isn't nearly as technical as you would like.

i did the silverton thing a few years back and although its nice its sooo out in the middle of nowhere...im lookin to stay closer to the summit county area or at least in the vacinity.

Yes buff pass in steamboat is ok and there are some good lines but I doubt you will find them in a snow-cat. Snow-cats are slow and expensive. If I were you I would rent a snowmobile or find somone with one on here and pay them to take you out on vail pass. Vail pass also has cat skiing but you obviously know how I feel about cat-skiing. They are freaking slow, I know because I drive one.

Snowmobile+vailpass=fun
