Definitely really cool, but they've been doing this kind of green screen work for years... i guess if you didn't understand before then ya its pretty crazy, but a lot of movies are made just how you saw them make shots in this video.

very serious. the 2 dudes jogging at 1:02. the car parking at 2:11 (although if it needs to be winter and you're filming in summer I can see the point). reporter at 2:12. girls carrying groceries at 2:33.

all would be so simple and cheap and easy to not greenscreen and probably 11/16 directors would choose not to use a greenscreen in those situations.

First of all, what do you mean cheaper? its the same amount of time to edit/shoot/whatever, its not like keying out a green screen and adding a background is very hard. Second of all, being able to shoot in a controlled setting (aka not in public, where they can light it how they want, have as many people as they want, etc, which is the majority reason they shoot like this) it 10000000000000 times easier.

animating a background (I'm assuming that's what most of them are) is damned expensive. one big reason why so many directors choose to use real stunts over special effects when possible. Just filming a car being parked as opposed to filming it being parked, then adding all sorts of animated backgrounds and what not would be much cheaper. And even if a background isn't animated, that means they need to go out to that location and make sure all the things you said are a problem aren't a problem when they film. might as well just do it all in one go. especially for something like the 2 guys walking. clips exactly like that have been filmed a million times before. it's down to a science how perfectly they can film something like that on location. absolutely no need to greenscreen.

Its really not "animating" . keying greenscreen footage is really not very hard at all if it is shot properly.

Wow. The stuff from Monk was UNREAL...

I have spent heaps of time in San Francisco... Grew up in the Bay Area. I figured the entire show was absolutely done on location, because it was so true to where it was. The locations would be all spots in the city that I had either been to, or recognized very easily...

...Now I know why I never ran into a shooting of Monk... They weren't always in SF.

and if you're shooting it properly you might as well just put your actor in front of the camera too. for a guy just walking through central park, it makes so so so much more sense than greenscreening. I could see the logic if you're shooting entirely in LA expect for a few shots and you don't want to move a shit load of equipment across the country.

but for shots like that of an unaltered and simple skyline I can guarantee the majority of movies will shoot it without greenscreen if they are already filming in that general location.

i have a hard time believing that in the world of tv & film where EVERYTHING comes down to money, a company is going to go out of its way to deliberately make shots more complicated and expensive than they need to be.

You still don't get it dude. Shooting on location inside a busy ass city is shitty. You can light anything, you cant bring all of your equipment, you'd most likely get harassed by some kind of cops (even though its legal) if you were shooting with anyone remotely famous that'd be a shit show. Shooting a screen in back area of a studio in hollywood is 1000 times easier than shooting it in down town LA and not only is it easier but its cheaper, you are wrong. You cant just throw your actor in front of a scenic shot and expect that to be the good shot. It takes more than one take to get a shot, it takes time, light changes, people come and goes, etc. Having a controlled setting to shoot in is extremely easier. Get it yet?

Most of those shows shown are shot in LA. Sets and green screen at a studio, it can all be done in one place, quickly and efficiently.

It ruins a lot of movies for me when I see "behind the scenes" type stuff. I know there's a ton of greenscreen and CGI stuff when I watch it, but it still feels real until I actually see the "Making Of" parts.
