Enjoy living in your bubble. I'm sure to Aussies and Kiwis they sound really different, but to the rest of the world they sound almost exactly the same.

I spent my last summer in both New Zealand and Australia, and even after being there for the whole summer I couldn't tell the accents apart. Just saying.

relative difference between noteworthy native english-speaking countries' accents:

Canada/US ----------> UK -> South Africa (?)-------> NZ --> Australia

there's a very subtle difference between nz and australia but it's way different from us and uk accents. Not sure if South Africa counts as native english speaking but people of british descent there basically sound british.

And NZ was a part of aussieland way back in the day so geographically its basically the same.

Then of course there's all the different north american/british isles accents but disregard that.

What do you mean "Canada/US"? Parts of the US sound like Canada (northern part), parts of it sound nothing like it (deep south for example).

But the accent thing is like me being from jersey and saying people from south jersey and north jersey sound different, both of which sound completely different than somebody from manhattan. When I go to southern states people have asked me if I'm from new york city, but I sound nothing like them. I know the kiwi/aussie accent is different but I'd have to hear them side by side to tell.

By way back in the day do you mean 200 million years ago?

The accents are about as different as someone from the deep south of the US and a Canadian. Not hard to tell the difference at all.

Simple test:

Ask an Australian to say "All hands on deck"

They will respond with what sounds like "all hands on deck"

As a New Zealander to repeat the same phrase and they will respond with what sounds like "All hands on dick"

Its like saying that someone has a specific-part-of-america accent. the yanks can distinguish it, but its all the same to me.

just like how an ozzie accent sticks out like a sore thumb to us.

That's an exaggeration. The difference is more like someone from northern california and someone from southern california. The deep south barely even speaks english.

LOL, pretty sure i don't say "dick" and i'm a NZ'er.

In the large scheme of things the accents are very similar. If you were born and raised in NZ or Australia telling the difference is easy, but you being very close minded if you can't see how easy it'd be for someone in the northern hemisphere to mistake it.

I was actually taught that by a Kiwi, we had a good conversation about who pronounced "dick" correctly.

I'm just having a joke. I can see how you could mistake them if you weren't used to it.

What el gato said, we have very similar accents, that 'how to speak new zealander' thing seemed more australian though.

just to clarify we are NOT the same country,the ausse flag has one more star than ours,our accents are different, we were never part of ausse and in general we are just a better country
