Cliff jumping camera

So im gunna go do some cliff jumping this weekend and i was wondering what the best way to use the gopro is. Do you guys put it on a small pole or like a wrist strap. ive never used it for water stuff and just want to know what works best

gopro does not cover water damage. if your gonna use it for cliffjumping id get someone else to film you

how big is the cliff? and is it into like a river or lake? cuz if its in a river you gotta have it pretty secure incase you drop it

contour has a pole strap and you can get safety leashes. or your wrist. I'm not a gopro kinda guy.

when i'm in a pool i just use the case but if you're going cliff jumping i'd put some duct tape around the opening edges just to be sure.. they don't cover water damage..

also, i'd have somebody in the water to film or above.. it doesn't look very good if you try to film yourself.

Get a string and tie it around your wrist and then hold the camera at yourself or buy the wrist strap

There's the floater that you can attach on the back. Eye of mine sells a ton of extra, cool things for the go pro. The chest mount would hold secure if you've got that. A string through the whole in the case would work fine if that's all you've got though, just don't drop it

used mine for an entire week just handheld or with someone in the water, both worked fine although a friend of mine did think stick mounts would be cool, it seemed to me as if you'd have the camera hit the surface even harder than when its in your hand....

also, the floater would be a nice addition but 1 i didn't drop it a single time and 2, even if you do drop it, how deep is it going to sink ? deepest spot i jumped in was like 7m which is still within diving range for recovery ....

If you had a GoPro, and read the instructions, it says it can leak from even just one hair being on the watertight seal.

My friends leaked because he had a piece of fuzz in it.

also, hard impacts on a water surface can also cause the case to leak or damage the camera...
that being said, it would be dumb if you had a gopro and didn't do stuff with it because it 'might' damage it ....

those things are designed to capture gnar stuff! go out there and make it suffer !

hahaha. wow.. they provide you with their own "waterproof" camera case, thats specifically designed for their "action sports" camera, and wont even cover water damage to their product.

but then again.. thats about as legit as getting your skis warrantied for edge cracks/delam

they all claim there water proof. and water got into mine sent a huge rant to gopro and pretty much told me to shove it up my but

i'm an underwater scubadiving photographer and i don't know a single brand of housings or cameras that covers water damage, unless ofcourse you can prove it's due to a manufacturing error...

i'd say 99% of all flooded housings i've seen are due to the user's fault, ie. using it in rough water, waterproof seals are not suited to absorb shocks,
dirty sealings, a hair, grain of sand or dust can compromise your seal....
worn sealings, these things don't last forever, replace em !
didn't close correctly
etc....


gopro is a pretty legit brand when it comes to warranty, but don't expect em to cover stuff beyond what's reasonable .....

the gopro water damage and ski edge damage above was pretty good i think, in most cases it's the users own fault and not the manufacturer .....

I used mine for a day. The wrist strap worked the best. Just buy a foam pool floatie, cut off a piece and attatch it to the gopro housing so if it falls off your hand you wont lose it to the bottom of the water.

My gopro still works fine a year after cliff jumping with it. Just dubcheck there isnt anything on the little rubber piece and you should be fine.

well if you wanted to be sure you could tape the seal shut or something and that might work for awhile, but yah just make sure there isnt anything caught in the seal.

I was gonna buy one soon for whitewater kayaking along with skiing. There are tons of whitewater kayaking edits made by gopros and that is really rough water. people do 70 foot waterfalls with them on their helmet or the boat so I think they can handle it.

the part where i jumped its pretty deep but 10 feet to each side its not very deep. its not as sketch as it looks

My buddy just tied it to his shorts and held it. He got a sick video of another guy gainering off a bridge while he jumped with him.

If your are filming with a go pro, it should be fine as far as waterproofing goes (to test the casing just take the camera out and put it in water.

But on the shooting side, if your camera lens gets wet it is very hard to dry off without getting drips on it which will ruin the shot so id also suggest having someone else hold it for you.

If your are shooting from below also make sure the camera isn't pointed at the sun because that too will ruin the shot.

DO NOT DROP THE CAMERA. Even if you do recover it, what hits the bottom first is always the lens and it scratches really easily, also ruining your shots.

Im speaking from experience. My favorite way is having a friend shoot it from the shore, you will always get the best shots this way, and while a pov here and there can be fun, its pretty annoying to have to dry off the lens every shot.

You should drop a line from to top of the cliff to the water next to where you jump and then drop the gopro down it as you jump. It'll follow you down like a ghetto version of the camera angle they use for diving in the olympics.

i've gone swimming with mine tons of times, in the ocean skimboarding and bodysurfing and dropped it off my zipline to the bottom of my pond and never has it leaked...

Yeah it was dope! we saw the footage right after when he jumped with him and got super stoked. That's such a fun area! That bridge is dope there are always people hanging out there and upriver a little ways is that rope swing at the end of the vid and like 3 or 4 other cliffs to jump between 15-50 ft. Also a super gnarly stand in a tree about 65 ft. It's the chill spot all summer.
