Kootenays ski resort clears one hurdle

Province gives environmental green light
VICTORIA - A controversial $450-million ski resort in the Kootenays has been given environmental approval by the provincial government.
The Jumbo Glacier Resort in the Purcell Mountains west of Invermere would be a year-round ski and recreation facility.
Sustainable Resources Minister George Abbott says the environmental approval is only one step in a longer road to developing the resort.
He says developers now have to obtain municipal permits and put together a master development plan.
The original development plan covered an area about one-third the size of Whistler's ski resort.
However, the developer reduced the footprint by 60 per cent to cut the impact on the more than 150 grizzly bears in the area.

Isn't Panorama already near Invermere. That place blows. They get less than 200 inches a year. Hopefully it's further west so it picks up the weather patterns of places like White water anf Red. Then it would be a cool resort.

RK Heli ski was trying to fight the proposal because they utilize a lot of the terrain that is supposed to encompass the resort.

Ive skied that area and let me tell you.. THE BEST POW. It's only a matter of time until places like that are developed and blow up.. and i guess it's already starting.

What's the deal with the resort that they were talking about building right outta Nelson. Any word on that. I still think Whitewater gets better snow that anywhere except maybe Utah. Most underrated resort in North America.

I think it would be sweet if Panorama got killed. It's their own damn fault for putting a ski resort in a place where it never snows.
I don't think White water would ever get Whistlerized. There's so many hippies in Nelson that would never let it happen. Also there's no airport nearby, no big cities, and the drive in from ever direction is shitty. If it did happen it would take a long time. But the area does have the potential because of all the amazing terrain.

I mean besides the grizzly bear thing, i didn't mean that.
But if they build the ski hill sensibly without to much developement it wouldn't be that harmful to the environement. Animals still live on fortress and nakiska as well as many other resorts. I just think that the bc governement is too anti development and in a way there is nothing wrong with that but I would like to have another nice ski resort in the kootenays where you could ski all year round i mean who wouldn't want that.

We already have enough resorts in the kootenays, theres no need for more. If somebodys hurting that much for more places to ski, then they should put some skins on for FUCK sakes. I've heard from alot of ppl that the Jumbo valley is the most beautiful place theyve ever seen. and when u compare that with the Valhalla's and Kokanee thats saying something. Our BC government is a corporate whore, spinning off the political axis of what is 'liberal.' This bullshit cannot go on. I say valdalize!

i've skied with RK a few times now and they are a wicked operation and i would hate to see them shut down but it doesnt make sense because there is no major airport close by or cities. where are they going to get there weekend warriors from?

Yeah he BC government has gotten super liberal about skiing developments lately. I think it said in Powder that something like 70 new backcountry ski business have opened in the last 5 years. Like in the Nelson area there use to be just one cat operation. Now there are alike 3 and 1 heli operation. I think the new ski area sounds really cool. But that area is so cool I wouldn't want to see it all get developed.
