Walkie talkies for freeriding?

Last year i've been doing some more tricky freeriding and interacting with photographers and other riders and i've found that using walkietalkies was actually really useful and i'm thinking of buying a set but don't know shit about them so maybe some of you guys can give me some advice ?

Last winter i borrowed one of my friend, (i think a motorola) with a separate push to talk microphone that we rigged through our pockets so we could talk without having to take out the entire walkietalkie and i found it very handy so i was thinking of getting a similar setup ...

anyways, all advice is welcome !

make sure you don't get toys. also get some with a headphone jack so you can plug in micd headphones

I use them for hunting all of the time, I found the best headset is the "security" mic. I call it that because the ear piece is like what you see the secret service wearing. then the mic has a button on it that you can but anywhere, usually do somewhere like the zipper.

yeah, but i think earpieces and such would suck pretty hard when you're using a helmet+gloves....

i was really thinking of getting something with a wire mic like this:

yeah, I havent used mine for skiing so you may be right.


On my old ski team the coaches used those and seems to have zero issues. put that part in their breast pocket.

Get professional ones with a good range. I used to have nice "top of the line" consumer ones and you couldn't message each other from more than a mile away.

Motorola is a good company, I think they make those standard black rectangle ones with a big antenna, and have those mics you are talking about.

From quick research, the Motorola RDX ___2020 looks good (the ___ being a different model based on frequency, i dont know what the netherlands allows for personal use!)

You could probably try and get some of those ones that you need a license for, they're pretty clear(the ones I've seen) and huge range

just looked at those motorollas and damn, they're around 500$ :/ thats a bit too steep for me ...

i was thinking more about one of the better commercial ones for like 100-200$ incl. mic
